Vancouver Golf Tour - Johnston Meier Insurance Open

MARKETPLACE IGA - VANCOUVER GOLF TOUR

TOURNAMENT REVIEW

2009 Johnston Meier Insurance Open
Aug.1 - 2nd
Sandpiper Golf Resort
Harrison Mills, BC

“HADWIN RED-HOT AGAIN AT SANDPIPER”

In blistering hot weather, 21 year old VGT Rookie Professional Adam Hadwin of Morgan Creek continued his run of near flawless golf this weekend at the 2009 JOHNSTON MEIER INSURANCE OPEN. Hadwin’s two round total of 66, 69 (-9) was good enough for a 2-shot victory over Seymour Creek’s Bryn Parry to win the title and collect $1,600 towards the Cleveland/Srixon Order of Merit standings.

After 27 holes of this Championship, it looked like Hadwin would be a shoe-in to win his third VGT event in only five tries. Sitting at 9 under par Hadwin had a five shot lead over Parry and seven shots over any third place chasers with 9 holes to play. Hadwin’s five shot lead however diminished over the first six holes on the back nine as two groups ahead John Shin made a late charge on the back nine including four birdies on the front nine, an eagle on the par 5 #15 and a hole-in-one on #16 to get himself to -7 for the day and the tournament. A late bogey on #17 would put Shin back to -6 for the tournament and in 3rd place overall, good for $900.

A CLUB CAR ACE: John Shin’s Ace on #16 WON him a CLUB CAR Precedent POWER CAR (www.clubcar.com) valued at $8,000!!! Thanks to Kevin Orton of Club Car, one of VGT’s Official Hole-in-one sponsors this year!

In the final pairing of the day Parry was also making a slow but steady charge of his own. After opening with a front nine score of 34 (-2), Parry continued his steady play with three birdies in a row on 13, 14 and 15 to get to -7 for the tournament. Hadwin made a birdie of his own on 11 to get to -10, but all of a sudden made this tournament quite interesting when he attempted to flop it from the side of the green on #15 and after two swings only advanced his ball a couple of yards. This lead to a bogey on his card and with three holes to play his lead had shrunk to only two shots over Parry.

Although Parry made a valiant run over the next three holes, including a great pitch shot from the side of the 18th green that nearly went in for birdie, Hadwin was hailed the Champion after he pitched up to 2 feet from the side of the green to win his third VGT Championship in only six starts. Hadwin continued his march up the CLEVELAND GOLF/ SRIXON CANADA Order of Merit but could not catch Parry who took home $1,100 for his 2nd place showing. After 13 VGT events, Parry leads Hadwin by only $462 with $9,937.50. More impressively is that both players have continued to battle for 1st and 2nd place in four of the last five events on the VGT schedule – Hadwin with three wins and two 2nd place finishes in as many events.

STROKE AVERAGES “IN THE RED”:

Both Hadwin and Parry are boasting incredible stroke averages so far this year on the Vancouver Golf Tour schedule. Hadwin has posted a remarkable stroke average of 67.27 over 11 tournament rounds and a whopping 46 under par for this stretch. Parry definitely battled some challenging winter/spring conditions on the earlier portion of the VGT schedule, but still holds a very solid stroke average of 69.16 over 18 rounds. He is also a total of 41 under par for the same 11 rounds of Summer VGT events and 43 under for all 18 tournament rounds since the start of the year. “These two are definitely separating themselves from the rest of the field on the Vancouver Golf Tour the past five events. It’s going to take a big challenge from any of the remaining 8 players in the top 10 of the CLEVELAND/SRIXON Order of Merit to knock either of them off the top. The Vancouver Open (final event to determine who will be awarded a paid entry down to the 2009 PGA Tour Q-School) will sure be a climactic end to the season” stated VGT Commissioner Fraser Mulholland.

AMATEUR HEADLINES:

It took a very impressive final round of 68 by Coquitlam’s Matt Rohatensky to take Amateur honours at the JM Open this year. Rohatensky finished t4th overall in the tournament at -4 with rounds of 72, 68 to win the Amateur title by 2 shots over Mission Golf Club’s Stu Dunaway and three shots over Sandpiper’s own Yves Bisson. This was Rohatensky’s third Amateur win on the VGT schedule, pushing him over 1,000 points ahead of his next competitor in the Championship Amateur Division of the CLEVELAND/SRIXON ORDER OF MERIT. In the Low Net side of the tournament it was Dave Dodsworth who stole the show with his impressive second round score of 77 (net 65). Both Rohatensky and Dodsworth took away winners’ trophies, a Sun Mountain Speed cart and $200 in Perfect Lies Gift Certificates.

Vancouver Golf Tour - 2009 Chilliwack Open

Marketplace IGA - VANCOUVER GOLF TOUR

2009 CHILLIWACK OPEN
Chilliwack Golf & Country Club
July 18,19TH

PARRY PACKS A PUNCH AT CHILLIWACK OPEN

On a blistering hot and windy weekend, Seymour Creek Professional Bryn Parry showed all 208 participants of the 2009 CHILLIWACK OPEN that he is a force to be reckoned with. Despite starting Sunday’s final round 2 shots back of 21-year old rookie sensation Adam Hadwin, by the 4th hole Parry had taken command of this 51st Annual event starting on fire, birdie, birdie, birdie, eagle. Parry not only closed the gap, but surged ahead to -8 for the tournament and now lead by 5 shots after 4 holes after Hadwin hooked his drive out-of-bounds on #2 to take a triple bogey 7 on the hole.

This event however was certainly not over as the rookie Hadwin charged right back into the tournament with six birdies from holes 4 through 11 to get back level with Parry at -8 for the tournament after Parry’s charge slowed down momentarily with a bogey on #8 and pars thru the 11th. A bit of loose play from both players on the 12th hole put the leaders back at -7 for the tournament before the veteran Parry dropped it up one gear when he birdied the 14th par 3 for a 2-shot lead after Hadwin bogeyed. Parry gave Hadwin a couple of chances to narrow his lead with approach shots that flew over the green on #16 and left on #17. The pivotal moment in the tournament turned out to be a battle of the short game as Parry’s two up and downs on #16 and 17 were just too much for Hadwin to handle, missing an 8 footer of his own on 16 for birdie and then 3-putting from 50 feet on the 17th.

Parry closed the event in style, drawing a mid-iron around the oak tree on 18 from 165 yards out to 20 feet and nailing his birdie putt to go 9-under par, putting an exclamation point on his second win this year on the Vancouver Golf Tour schedule. Parry’s win and cheque for $2,000 vaults him to the top of the CLEVELAND GOLF/ SRIXON CANADA Order of Merit (OOM) with $7,337.50. Hadwin’s second place showing vaulted him up the VGT OOM from 5th to 3rd and $5,675.00 after playing only 4 events on the VGT schedule. Hadwin’s four results have included two 2nd place finishes and a win at the Ledgeview Open two weeks ago. Hazelmere’s Phil Jonas struggled on day two shooting 74 and missed cutting a cheque by one shot. After 11 events, Jonas sits in 2nd place on the CLEVELAND GOLF/SRIXON CANADA Order of Merit with $6,028.66.

In the Amateur side of the tournament, 23-year old Kevin Stinson of Ledgeview took home low honours with scores of 70,74 to win by two shots over Chilliwack’s own Mike Broadfoot. Stinson had mixed emotions after his second round - happy to win his second Amateur title this year, but also disappointed he didn’t finish stronger and take on the top Professionals in the field, ultimately one of his main goals. Stinson was quoted as saying he ‘Learned a lot from some of the top Professionals he played with in this event and noted that they rarely made any ‘unforced errors’ during their play’. Stinson will look to win the ‘Triple Crown’ next weekend as he is registered for VGT’s next event – The 2009 Golden Ear’s Open at Pitt Meadows Golf Club.

Jonas Jumps Ahead at the Hadassah-Wizo Pro-Am

Boasting the largest field of golf Professionals in its tournament history, the 27th Annual Hadassah-Wizo Pro-am Tournament hosted at the meticulously groomed Richmond Golf and Country Club by a first class organization and emceed by CTV’s own Jason Pires, proved to be a huge success once again. Of the more than forty Professionals vying for the prestigious Bess Panar trophy, thirteen posted scores below par. Veteran Phil Jonas of McCleery Golf Course birdied six holes on the day to finish at 67 (-5), just enough to capture the coveted trophy and a cheque for $1700.00 for his fine play.

It comes as no surprise to those following the close race for the 2009 Cleveland Golf/ Srixon Canada Order of Merit that with the Hadassah-Wizo win Jonas recaptures the tightly contested lead from close golfing rival Bryn Parry. Finishing a stroke behind Jonas Monday were Professional rookie Adam Hadwin of Morgan Creek, Professional Dan Swanson of Guildford, and Sechelt Golf & C.C. Professional Blake Mithrush, who each earn cheques for $1200.00. With several tournaments left on the 2009 Vancouver Golf Tour schedule, including the Chilliwack Open happening this weekend and the upcoming Golden Ears Invitational, Jonas will have to play great golf this summer to retain his slim margin on the Cleveland Golf/ Srixon Canada Order of Merit.

Click here to view the Team & Pro Prize list

In the team portion of the Hadassah-Wizo Pro-am event, the true surprise of the day came when it was announced at the end of the evening that VGT’s own Commissioner Fraser Mulholland had captained his pro-am team to victory over Team German (Ron Corber, Earl Winstock, and Ray Greenfeld). Team Mulholland, consisting of Dale Borland, Raymond Kiem and Neil Johnston, found a great liking to the well kept conditions at the Richmond Golf and Country Club. “My guys were striking it very well on the day.” Mulholland’s team effort earned him a cheque for $200.00 and his team a Vancouver Island Golf Getaway.

The Low Gross Amateur honours of the night belonged to Kyle Ulinder, carding a respectable 74 for the day and earning him a gift certificate for a pair of sunglasses of his choice. With the Low Par Points honour belonging to Shane Cunningham with 47 points, he walks away with a new customized pair of golf shoes.

Although the tally has not been finalized, this year’s tournament has no doubt continued to keep with tradition in raising significant funds for the Prostate Centre at Vancouver General Hospital. At this time I would like to extend my thanks to the countless and often thankless hours spent by the Vancouver Hadassah Wizo Committee (Bev, Connie, Fay and many others) and its supporting staff of volunteers to coordinate such a well organized event. Just ask any past contestant of the tournament. Thanks also go out to Richmond Golf and Country Club (from the fabulous Greens Crew to the Catering staff) for their generous support of the tournament and in particular to Head Professional Derek Thornley and his staff, for without whom this event would not happen so successfully.

Continued thank-you also goes out to VGT’s contributing sponsors of the event: MarketPlace IGA and Club Car.

This is VGT’s second year affiliated with the Hadassah Wizo Pro-am, bringing our Live Scoring features to the event, giving players a chance to see the on course action. Much appreciation also goes out to the VGT event team, (Heidi, Mike, Fanny, Bryan, Bill, and Tom) who keep VGT going from event-to-event!

2009 Vancouver Golf Tour Ledgeview Open

Saturday, Sunday - July 4, 5th
“HADWIN HOT AT LEDGEVIEW OPEN”

Twenty-one year old rookie Professional Adam Hadwin of Morgan Creek and Ledgeview stormed a field of 176 golfers at the 2009 Ledgeview Open to win his maiden Professional victory, earning him $2,800 and vaulting him into 7th place on the CLEVELAND GOLF/SRIXON CANADA Order of Merit on the Vancouver Golf Tour. After scaring the Ledgeview course record on day one with a flawless round of 63, Hadwin fended off a number of past champions including Bryn Parry, Ray Stewart and Andrew Smeeth to go on to win by 5 strokes over Northview’s Matt Palsenbarg with his 2-day total of 9-under par. Palsenbarg finished solo second with scores of 67, 69, good for a $2,000 cheque.

Round two kicked off as solidly for Hadwin as day one finished, birdying hole #1. Palsenbarg also birdied hole #1 after launching his drive to the back of the 344 yard par 4 green. From here however, things got a bit unsettled for Hadwin, making bogeys on #2 and #4 to go back to -6 for the tournament. With Palsenbarg making pars on 2 thru 4, he was now at -4 and only 2 shots back. Meanwhile, up ahead, some players were putting down early challenges on the front nine. Seymour Creek’s Bryn Parry rattled off 4 birdies on the first six holes to get to -3 for the tournament, but would eventually fall back with a double on 8 and bogeys on 10 and 12 to finish even for the tournament. Morgan Creek’s Jeff Dagg also burned the front nine up with five birdies to get to -1 for the day. He would end up making two more birdies for a fantastic round of 64 to finish in a tie for 3rd place at -3. Local Pro Andrew Smeeth was also on a tear through 15 holes at -5 for the day, but a bogey on 16 slowed the charge and he would shoot a 66 on the day and also tie for 3rd.

After some more solid play through the front nine and birdies on #9 and #10 by Hadwin, he now had a lead of 4 shots with 8 to play. A fine birdie by Palsenbarg on the par 3 – 12th diminished his lead to three shots with 7 to play. The turning point, however seemed to be when Palsenbarg airmailed the 12th green with a 9-iron, leaving himself a near impossible up and down to the back pin. After a miraculous hybrid chip under a tree and through the rough, Palsenbarg lipped out his 15 foot par putt and Hadwin’s lead went back to 4 shots with only 6 holes remaining. Two more bogeys by Palsenbarg on holes 14 and 15 after errant tee-shots left this tournament in the hands of the young Professional who grew up learning his golf around the Ledgeview track. Hadwin played steadily in through the final holes, parr-ing in to take the overall Championship title in front of a local gallery surrounding the 18th green.

In a post round interview, Hadwin commented on his steady play from tee-to-green on day one that set-up a number of birdie chances that were capitalized on with a very solid putter. “Round two wasn’t quite the same on the first four holes”, stated Hadwin. “I hit it in a couple of places that let’s just say you don’t want to be when playing at Ledgeview”. “Beyond that, I settled down and played some great golf again and I am very happy with my first ever Professional Win”.

The Ledgeview Open was only Hadwin’s 4th ever Professional event. After successfully making it through to the weekend in both Canadian Tour stops in Victoria (t58th) and at the City of Surrey Inviational (t35th) and a 12th place in his first VGT event at the Guildford Open, it looks like Hadwin is heading the right direction after pocketing his first professional victory in only 4 tries. He will continue to play the remainder of the VGT schedule and chase down the Order of Merit leaders in search of the winning award of a free entry down to PGA Tour Qualifying School. Hadwin will tee-it-up at next Monday’s Hadassah Wizo Pro-am at the Richmond Country Club.

This day couldn’t have been better for Hadwin’s father (Gerry), who managed to make it (from Morgan Creek where he resides as a PGA Club Professional) for the back nine to caddy for the younger of the two Hadwins in the final group. Yes, that’s right, two Hadwins in the final pairing of this Ledgeview Open as 18-year old Kyle Hadwin stunned the field with a personal best score of 68 off of a 7 handicap! The day was a great learning experience for young Kyle, who definitely took a few holes to settle his final group nerves, but he played some great golf on the back nine himself and should be commended on getting into the final group with his great opening round. This was the first ever competitive round that the Hadwin brothers had played together so it was a pretty special day for the whole family.

In the amateur end of the tournament, it was Ledgeview’s own Kevin Stinson who took home the coveted Amateur Title and trophy with some great golf over the two days, shooting 69, 70. Stinson edged Kelowna’s Norm Bradley by a mere one shot after Bradley narrowly missed his birdie chance on 18 to force a playoff. Overall Low Net in this year’s Ledgeview Open went to Joe Cocker with a two-day net score of 135. Congratulations to all Professional and Amateur winners at this year’s Open!

TAYLOR SIGHTING!

Well it wouldn’t have been the same Ledgeview Open without having its biggest celebrity around for one of the days. He was unfortunately unable to attend the tournament in a playing sense, but local sensation Nick Taylor (ranked #1 Amateur in the world) was spotted caddying for his brother Josh on day one, which was pretty cool for the fans to see and for his brother to have him on the bag. This is a total reversal of roles for the two as it has been brother Josh who has been playing a big part in Nick’s playing career, having caddied for him at two consecutive U.S. Open’s, most recently at this year’s where he opened the eyes of the world shooting an amazing 65 on day two and finishing Top Amateur in the U.S. Open field (t36th overall). Taylor recently won another illustrious event - the Sahalee Invitational just days before the Ledgeview Open. He will be making his way back east to prepare for the RBC Canadian Open at Glen Abbey which starts July 23rd. VGT would like to extend its congratulations to Nick for his wonderful season this year and for making such a statement on the world golf scene. All the best at the Canadian Open and the remainder of the ’09 season!

GREAT SHOTS!

There were many great shots witnessed this Ledgeview Open weekend. Two in particular will be remembered for being especially NICE:

Mike Smith – Hole-in-one on Hole #14 - Sunday

Fraser Mulholland – Hole-in-one on Hole #17 – Sunday

Congratulations to Mike and Fraser (yes, that’s me!!) for their great swings!

THANK-YOU’S:

VGT would like to thank the following individuals for making the 2009 Ledgeview Open such a great success:

2009 MAYFAIR LAKES CLASSIC
Mayfair Lakes Golf & Country Club
Sunday, June 7th

TOURNAMENT REVIEW

“Swenson’s Delight at the Lakes”

In a field of 68 Amateurs including 37 players in the Championship Flight (5.0 factor and under), Richmond’s Gordon Swenson prevailed in tough scoring conditions to win the 2009 VGT Mayfair Lakes Classic with a score of 70 (-1). Swenson’s round consisted of 7 birdies on the day including a final birdie at the 18th – good for a four shot victory over Mayfair Lakes regular Michael Son and McCleery’s John Othitis. This was Swenson’s first VGT event of the year and he plans to play quite a few more events this year. “It was great to get back to the tournament scene” stated Swenson after the round. “It’s been a while since I’ve been in that situation and it was great to finish off the way I did to capture the win”. Swenson’s younger golf days go back to Mayfair Lakes when he was a fixture working at the club and his local knowledge of the course obviously paid off. The 24 year old began his University career a few years ago down at Cal State Stanislaus and after one full year of golf in the Sunshine State, Swenson decided it was better suited for him to come back home to finish his education. Swenson enrolled at Douglas College last fall and spent the ‘08-‘09 season playing for their golf program. The Richmond golfer aims to finish off the next two years of his education at SFU and play for the re-vitalized golf program under long-standing coach John Buchanan. Swenson attributes his most recent success to his hard work, and in particular to the new fitness program he’s been working on with VGT Professional and golf fitness specialist Kendal Yonemoto. “I’ve been working extremely hard with Kendal the past 6 months and can’t say enough about the benefits it has given me to my swing. Its great to see that its now translating into tournament results” stated Swenson. Swenson took home a $200 Gift Card from Perfect Lies and a $300 Galvin Green Windstopper Jacket for his victory.

In the Flight A Division (6-10) it was Maple Ridge’s Helen Jung who stole the show winning Low Gross honours with a very respectable score of 77, one shot better than Surrey’s Daryl Archibald and Burnaby’s Daniel Lee. Jung was using the VGT event to tune-up her game for the BC Women’s Amateur Championship as well as a couple of Amateur events in the U.S. Jung won a Galvin Green Windstopper pullover and a $100 MarketPlace IGA Gift Card for her victory.

In Flight B (11-16) action, Vancouver’s Hector Aguilar prevailed by two shots over Maple Ridge’s Dave Ebner. Aguilar also won a Galvin Green Winstopper pullover and a $50 Gift Card from Perfect Lies for his victory. Low Net honours went to Northview regular David Patterson.

CLEVELAND GOLF/ SRIXON CANADA ORDER OF MERIT
With his t6th place showing at Mayfair Lakes, Surrey’s Derek Wray vaulted himself closer to our Championship Amateur leader Matt Rohatensky. Wray now trails Rohatensky by only 260 points after 10 VGT Amateur events. Rohatensky leads with 2,579 points. In the Flight A OOM, Daniel Lee’s t2nd showing at Mayfair Lakes edged him to within a mere 13 points of leader Steve Smith of Guildford Golf Club who stands with 2,783 points. Flight B Leader David Patterson kept himself ahead of the pack with his t3rd finish and put more ground between him and the next chaser Pete Fung. Patterson banked 270 points for his finish and now leads Flight B with 2,560 points.

VGT would like to extend their thanks to Paul Nijjer of Mayfair Lakes and all his support staff for helping us co-ordinate such a great event!! The golf course was in fantastic condition and we look forward to hosting many events with the GolfBC group in the future.

2009 Vancouver Golf Tour Spring Championship

MarketPlace IGA
VANCOUVER GOLF TOUR

2009 VGT SPRING CHAMPIONSHIP
Hazelmere Golf Course
Thursday, May 28th

TOURNAMENT REVIEW

“Jonas Schools them all at his home track at Hazelmere”

In a star-studded field of 45 Professionals, including 26 past or present Canadian Tour players, Hazelmere’s own Teaching Professional Phil Jonas showed them all how it’s done, shooting 68 (-4) on a challenging Hazelmere layout for a one shot victory over Guilford Head Professional Dan Swanson. Jonas’ lone bogey on the day came on the long par 3 – 7th hole, where he failed to get up-and-down for what would be his fault on the card. When interviewed after the round, Jonas owned up that it wasn’t the prettiest of rounds, but as he is so well known for, he made the very most of his good play and ‘worked his way around the golf course’ like he knows how to better than most anyone in the game, certainly here in Vancouver. Jonas took home $1,500 for his victory and vaulted himself some $1,300 ahead of past Nationwide Tour Player Bryn Parry. MarketPlace IGA’s John MacNichol was on hand to award the professional cheques to all winners. When Jonas was given the opportunity to speak, he very quick to add how thankful he and everyone playing VGT was for their continued support of local golf in Vancouver. China Tour player Dong Su and Shaughnessy Professional Lindsay Bernakevitch tied for 3rd, each winning $672.50. Swanson earned $1,000 for his 2nd place showing.

VGT gave a warm welcome to one of Canada’s finest young talented golfers, James Lepp - 2005 NCAA Champion and 2-time Greater Vancouver Charity Classic winner. “It was great to have James in our field today” stated VGT Commissioner Fraser Mulholland. “Not only does James add to the credibility of our tour by his presence, but it was great to see him back in action at what he does so very well”. Lepp fired 71 (-1), good for 5th place and $550. He commented after the round that it was ‘good to get back into his first tournament in over 6 months and feel the competitive juices flowing’. With only a bit of expected ‘tournament rust’ from not competing for so long, Lepp got the job done for the most part in the event– and other than a couple of late bogeys on his last two holes, looked very impressive and ready to return to action in both the Victoria Open and City of Surrey Open coming up on the Canadian Tour schedule starting next week. Lepp has been hard at work lately developing his own personal brand of golf shoes and golf apparel - KIKKOR GOLF (http://www.kikkor.com/).

The Spring Championship was the final event on the VGT Spring Series of events and CLEVELAND GOLF/SRIXON CANADA President Dan Dodman was present to award some bonus money to the top CLEVELAND/SRIXON staff player at the end of the Spring Order of Merit. Seymour Creek’s Dave Zibrik took home the $500 CLEVELAND/SRIXON BONUS cash for being the top CLEVELAND/SRIXON staff player at the conclusion of the Hazelmere event.

VGT’s 7th ‘Open’ tour event of the year was a great opportunity for the top local Professionals to see Hazelmere a couple of weeks in advance of the Canadian Tour event (City of Surrey Open) being hosted there on June 8-15th. We want to personally thank Hazelmere Golf Course for giving our local players this opportunity and hope that this might be the slight advantage our local players need to bring home a local victory in this major event on the Canadian Tour schedule.

VGT also invited 20 of its top Amateur players to play in the Spring Championship this Thursay. Low Amateur honours went to Coquitlam’s Matt Rohatensky, who carded 75 (+3) on the tough Hazelmere set-up to win by 2 shots over Delta’s Jarda Kollar. Rohatensky leapt ahead of Northview’s Derek Wray by 400 points in the Championship Amateur Order of Merit with his second victory of the year, earning himself a Cleveland Travel cover and $200 in Perfect Lies Gift Cards.

VGT’s top 5 Amateurs in Flight A were invited to the Hazelmere event and it was Greenacres’ own Daniel Lee who prevailed, winning a Cleveland Travel cover and a $100 Perfect Lies Gift Card. Pete Fung was the Low Amateur in Flight B, also winning a Cleveland Travel cover and a $100 Perfect Lies Gift Card.

Vancouver Golf Tour - Swan-E-Set Classic Results

MarketPlace IGA
VANCOUVER GOLF TOUR

VGT SWAN-E-SET CLASSIC
Swan-e-set Bay Resort Course
Sunday, May 17th
7000 yards, Par 72

“A WRAY OF SUNSHINE AT SWAN-E-SET”

On an uncharacteristically hot and humid day in May, it was Surrey golfer Derek Wray who led the field of 64 amateur golfers with a score of 75 (+3) on the way to his second amateur victory of the year on the Vancouver Golf Tour schedule. Wray persevered on extremely difficult scoring conditions as the hot weather over the last two days made the smooth Swan-e-set putting surfaces firm and fast and unreceptive to anything more than a sand wedge. “The golf course was in perfect condition” stated Wray. “The greens were running with perfect pace and incredibly smooth. The challenge to the day was certainly getting the ball close to the hole with the greens getting firmer and firmer as the day went on. We’ve all been so used to all the greens being so soft the past 6 months and I guess with quite a few tucked pins, that’s why the scores weren’t as low as we all expected”. With the 600 points for his victory, Wray has put a firm grip on his lead in the Championship Amateur side of the CLEVELAND GOLF/SRIXON CANADA Order of Merit – now some 400 points ahead of last week’s GREEN ROOM OPEN Amateur Champion Matt Rohatensky. Wray took home a Cleveland stand bag and $100 Gift Card for Perfect Lies for his win. He was one shot clear of Surrey Golf Club’s Joey Lemieux who won a $150 MarketPlace IGA gift card and a Galvin Green Shirt. The VGT Spring Championship, being held next Thursday, May 28th at Hazelmere Golf Club will no doubt be an exciting one to watch to see who takes the Order of Merit Title for the Spring.

Vancouver’s Sean Crowther sailed his way to victory in the Flight A Division with an impressive score of 75. He defeated his next competitor Greg Swalwell by a solid 5 shots en route to his first VGT victory on what was also his first event played on the VGT schedule. Crowther picked up a Cleveland stand bag and towel for his victory. Leading up to the VGT Spring Championship, Guildford’s Steve Smith (2,073 points) narrowly leads Port Moody’s Andre Maille by 60 points with Northview’s Dale Borland some 450 points behind in 3rd. In Flight B action, McCleery Golf Club’s Ian Sharma edged out North Vancouver’s Rob Colquhoun in retrogression to also win a Cleveland Bag and towel. Colquhoun’s gross score of 81 was also good enough for low net in the Flight B competition which earned him a new Cleveland CG12 Spin Milled wedge. Northview’s David Patterson leads the way in Flight B’s Order of Merit standings with 1,890 points, some 600 points ahead of his next challenger Fred Walters heading into next week’s Spring Championship. A special thanks to Swan-e-set Bay Resort for hosting our event and all to both their staff and the VGT volunteer support crew for helping co-ordinate this event!! The Swan-e-set prize results are attached and full tournament results and photo gallery of the event can be found on the VGT website at www.vancouvergolftour.com and then clicking on ‘LIVE SCORING’.

VANCOUVER GOLF TOUR

2009 VGT Northview Ridge Classic
Sunday, April 26th
Par 72, 6900 yards

Official Tournament Review

“Oliver Twists his way to the top at the Ridge”

At VGT’s Inaugural Amateur Series event at Northview’s Ridge course this Sunday, it was Maple Ridge’s James Oliver who withstood the rigors of “Championship Sunday Pins” to outlast 81 Amateur competitors on this day. Oliver’s round consisted of five birdies enroute to an even par 72 and a one shot victory over his next competitors Chris Kobler of Royalwood Golf Club and Coquitlam’s Matthew Rohatensky. Some great birdies on 16 and 18 by Oliver and late bogeys by Kobler on 18 and Rohatensky on 17 kept this event from going into a sudden death playoff. For his victory, Oliver won $200 in Perfect Lies Gift Certificates and a Galvin Green Windstopper pullover. His victory also earned him 600 valuable points and vaulted himself to the top of the CLEVELAND GOLF/ SRIXON CANADA Order of Merit (Championship Flight) with 1,280 points. Kobler’s t2nd place finish in the event moved him into 2nd place in the VGT Amateur OOM after 5 events. Both Oliver and Kobler have been a meausure of consistency so far this year having finished in the top 10 of each Championship Amateur events they have played thus far.

In Flight A of the VGT Northview Ridge classic, it was Port Moody’s Andre Maille who clutched up with a birdie on 18 to take low honours with a gross score of 77, one stroke ahead of Belmont Golf Club’s Brendan Lal. Maille took home $200 in Perfect Lies GC’s and a Galvin Green Shirt and edged himself to within 200 points of Guildford’s Steve Smith who leads the CLEVELEND/SRIXON OOM for Flight A.

In Flight B results, Maple Ridge’s George Mark took Low Gross honours with a score of 83 winning himself a Cleveland Hibore rescue club, beating his local Northview regular David Patterson by 3 shots.

2009 Nickel Heating Open

Ledgeview Golf & Country Club
Abbotsford, BC
Monday, April 20th

“Parry feels right at home again at Ledgview”

After a sluggish start to 2009 due to family and teaching commitments, Seymour Creek’s Bryn Parry was in fine form this Monday shooting 66 and winning VGT’s fourth event at Ledgeview – the 2009 NICKEL HEATING OPEN. Parry out-lasted 99 other golfers in Ironman like scoring conditions, and finished in style with a birdie-birdie finish to top Shaughnessy’s Brandan Price by one shot. Parry’s victory earned him $1,400 and more importantly vaulted him back into contention on the CLEVELAND GOLF / SRIXON CANADA Order of Merit, now only $300 short of Phil Jonas who leads with $2,408.66.

After his round, Parry commented how much he enjoys playing at the Abbotsford layout. “Ledgeview’s been very good to me over my career” stated Parry. “It sets up well for me and I enjoy the challenge of the golf course every time I play it”. If you count all the times we have played here in the LEDGEVIEW OPEN, the Pro-am and the NICKEL HEATING OPEN, I think I’ve won here 10 times”! 2008 NICKEL HEATING OPEN Champion Dan Swanson finished 3 back of Parry, carding a 69 and winning $441.67.

Parry will no doubt be looking forward to defending his title in a couple of months at the 2009 LEDGEVIEW OPEN on July 4,5th.

NICKEL HEATING & VENTILATION’S Steve Savage was on hand to play in the amateur side of the event and awarded Parry his winner’s trophy and cheque after the round. “It’s great to be a part of the Vancouver Golf Tour again this year and help support our aspiring Professional and Amateur golfers in the greater Vancouver region”. “We have many great local players (like Bryn) on the cutting edge of being one of the top players in the world and are confident that the tournament experiences VGT is providing will help prepare its players to become a Champion on the PGA Tour someday real soon”.

In the Championship Amateur side of the NICKEL HEATING OPEN, it was Coquitlam’s Todd Castanguay who navigated his way most successfully through Ledgeview’s challenging set-up to win Low Amateur Honours shooting 72 and ousting both David Cao of Richmond CC and James Oliver of Maple Ridge by one shot. Todd not only took home the coveted winners trophy, but also a $300 Galvin Green Windstopper jacket and $200 in Perfect Lies Gift Certificates. In the Flight A Division, Guildford’s Steve Smith took home first place honours winning with a score of 77, one shot better than Ledgeview’s own Joal Wishart. Finally, in the Amateur Flight B Division, Neil Johnston of Homestead Golf Club stole the show firing an impressive score of 76, some six shots better than his next challenger Brandan Brassart of Ledgeview Golf & CC.

Vancouver Golf Tour - 2009 Sandpiper Spring Classic

Sandpiper Golf Resort
Monday, April 13th

“Allenby’s Assault on Sandpiper serves as great Tune-up for Can Tour”

Canadian Tour Rookie James Allenby of Chilliwack battled rain, wind and hail at Sandpiper Golf Resort this Monday to claim his maiden Professional victory in VGT’s 3rd VGT Tour stop in ’09. Allenby posted 7 birdies and an eagle on his card en route to shooting 64 (-8) and a four shot victory over fellow Canadian Tour Pro John Shin and University Golf Club Professional Sergej Dronov. Allenby’s victory earned him $1,000, but more importantly the required tune-up he was looking for in preparation for his first Canadian Tour event in Mexico next week. “It’s been great to have VGT here to play the past few weeks to provide me with some great early tournament experience for my Can Tour schedule”.

After two years down at Oregon State University on scholarship, Allenby felt that although the university golf experience was great down, he felt it was time to put his golf to the test full-time and see where he could take his game professionally. With that in mind, Allenby made a trip back east in September of 2008 and gained full status on the Canadian Tour for ’09 where he tied for 4th in Qualifying School. He plans on playing a full schedule of events this year on the Canadian Tour and will use VGT as a place to play and stay sharp when he’s back in town between Can Tour stops. VGT would like to congratulate James Allenby on his first Professional victory and wish him all the best out on the Canadian Tour this year!

In our Amateur field, 53 golfers competed for some great prizes and Perfect Lies gift certificates in each flight. Our Overall Amateur winner Derek Wray of Surrey, BC grinded through very difficult scoring conditions for a solid round of even par 72 and a one-shot victory over 18 year-old David Cao of Richmond, BC. Wray won himself a sweet Galvin Green Wind stopper pullover and $100 GC from Perfect Lies for his victory while David Cao took home $200 in Perfect Lies GC’s for finishing runner-up. In the 6-10 Flight Amateur field it was local Richard Fife of Sandpiper Golf Resort who claimed victory with score of 81 (+9). Richard edged out Abbotsford’s Joal Wishart and Port Moody’s Andre Maille by retrogression and took home $200 in Perfect Lies GC’s for his solid play. Finally, in our 11-16 flight, Maple Ridge’s Dave Ebner took home low honours and cashed in with $150 in Perfect Lies GC’s.

New season, new deals for PGA Tour players

By JEFF BABINEAU, Golfweek Editor

KAPALUA, Hawaii – PGA Tour veteran Steve Lowery paused when asked if there was anything new in his golf bag to start the 2009 season. “Only everything,” he said, smiling.Lowery, 48, a longtime Cleveland staff player, is one of many Tour pros starting ’09 with a new deal. He is carrying a TaylorMade bag filled with TaylorMade Tour Preferred irons and an r7 Limited driver. He’ll continue to play a Titleist golf ball (“I’ve been a Titleist guy for 30 years,” he said.)

In a sign of tighter times for PGA Tour players, Lowery still is seeking a corporate endorsement on his chest. “Yeah, I had to go out and buy a bunch of shirts,” he said.

Vijay Singh started the year with a bum right knee and a new golf ball. Having won last year’s FedEx Cup playoffs with a Titleist Pro V1x, Singh has switched to a Srixon Z-Star golf ball. Boo Weekley is playing the new ball as well. “I think I hit it longer and I control it pretty good,” Singh said. “(It) spins as good as any ball I’ve used, and it’s very straight.”

Singh also is carrying the Stanford Financial logo on his bag this season and wearing the company logo on his visor.

In other news:>> Anthony Kim, arguably the most attractive “free agent” available this offseason, is expected to re-sign with Nike. Kim changed agents in 2008 (he now is represented by IMG), which stalled negotiations until Jan. 1. “I don’t know what’s going on there, but it would be strange not to be with Nike,” said Kim, who shot footage for a Nike commercial with Tiger Woods in Fort Worth, Texas, in the offseason.

>> Adams is expected to announce the signing of Ryder Cup player Chad Campbell, who had been with Nike. Campbell lives near the company’s Texas headquarters and plans to take an active role in helping Adams develop equipment lines. Campbell signed a ball, shoe and glove deal with Titleist.

>> D.J. Trahan, formerly with Wilson, has joined Titleist as a full-line player. He opened his season at Kapalua with Titleist ZM irons (4-PW), three Vokey wedges and a Scotty Cameron Newport SLT T10 putter. He is working on getting a new 909 series driver into his bag.

>> In addition to Lowery, TaylorMade added Paul Goydos, Richard S. Johnson, Tim Wilkinson, Charles Warren and Arjun Atwal as full-line players.

>> Ping announced it has re-signed Ryder Cup player Hunter Mahan, and Callaway announced a new multiyear agreement with Stuart Appleby.
