Golf Course Review - Greenacres GC

I played Greenacres for the first time last year and was quite impressed with the overall golf facility. Going in, Greenacres did not have the best reputation amongst our golfing friends and associates. However since being purchased by Shaughnessy Golf & Country Club about three years ago, new management and a commitment to capital improvements have dramatically improved this golf facility. I had the opportunity to play it again this year as part of the schedule for the Golf Pro / CK Golf Solutions Skins Game.

Jeff's Opinion: Greenacres was in good shape and considering the recent heat in Vancouver, was as the name states, pretty green overall. The green speeds were good, not overly fast, but ran very true. You really don't have to overplay any of the breaks. It is not overly long, but the back 9 does play longer than the front 9. The fairways were in great shape, very closely mown and the underbrush well cleaned out making the errant shot usually playable. Greenacres will yield some birdies, but the final few holes place an emphasis on driving accuracy.

Tara’s Opinion: While I did not play golf this time around I did join the group for lunch. The renovations to the clubhouse have made the space very inviting with a variety of seating options in the lounge, dining area or on the spacious patio. The menu has lots of options, not your typical golf course fare, and the weekly fresh sheet is an added bonus. Both the food and the service were great. The updated washrooms are also a nice touch.

Overall, it was a fun day and the feedback from the Professionals in the Skins Game was also very positive. There is certainly value in the green fee for the quality of conditions you get. I should also mention, the restaurant has a great menu selection, comfortable seating and numerous flat screen t.v.'s to watch the latest sporting event. Definitely worth stopping in for a bite after a game of golf.

Golf Course Review - Morgan Creek GC

I had the opportunity to play Morgan Creek Golf Course in Surrey a week or so ago. It started out as a boy’s golf trip to Loomis Trail, but it was wishful thinking we would zip across the border for the game. I was looking forward to playing at Loomis Trail, however when our group met up at Hazelmere the advertised border wait was 2.5 hours. It leaves me wondering what will happen at this border during the Olympics! In any event, after making a few calls, we were able to secure a tee time at Morgan Creek on short notice.

Jeff's Opinion: I hadn't played Morgan Creek in a few years and while disappointed about not playing at Loomis Trail, I was happy to be able to get another opportunity to play it. The course was in great shape; tee boxes well manicured, greens rolling at about 11 on the stimp meter, fairways very closely mown. There was obviously significant attention paid to the fertilizer and irrigation program as the course was one of the greenest I've see this year, not a brown spot to be found. The service in the Golf Shop, proximity of the warm-up range and frequency of the beverage cart visits were all excellent. The only thing I find odd about Morgan Creek is the arrival. After parking in the lot you carry your own clubs around the back of the Clubhouse, past some garbage bins and a cart wash area before reaching the Golf Shop. It has always seemed like a strange set-up to me.

None the less, Morgan Creek is in great shape and the service levels matched the course conditions, both which were excellent! I'd gladly play it multiple times through the season and highly recommend a trip to Surrey for a game.

Golf Course Review - Belmont Golf Course

After spending two days at Belmont Golf Course a couple of weeks ago, while running a Nike Junior Tournament for the CJGA, we were looking forward to our to opportunity to play the course. The CJGA tournaments require us to be on course with the kids quite a bit so we got to see all the holes and the course was in great condition.

Jeff's Opinion: On the scorecard, the yardage makes the course look short and with a Par of 70, thoughts of shooting a low number immediately came into my mind. However, while it may be "only" a Par 70, the six Par 3's at over 200 yards each from the back tees make for some tough scoring. With lots of driver holes and a couple of long Par 5's combined with water on a number of them, Belmont is a challenge. The course was very fun to play and was in great shape. The green speeds were also quicker then expected which was a good surprise. Belmont lacks a driving range, but makes up for it with a couple of hitting nets, a large practice putting green and a great short game chipping and sand trap area to warm-up or for some practice.

Tara's Opinion: I also thought that the course was fun to play because I like par 3’s, and well, there are six of them, and also because the red tee yardage of 5,392 is right in my comfort zone. The use of a shuttle service is a nice touch and definitely necessary for anyone who chooses to walk and to keep the pace moving. The restaurant area both inside and in the tent are well furnished and inviting but the lack of a full kitchen means that the menu is very limited and there is no outdoor seating available. The golf shop, also being very small, did not have a large selection of either Men’s or Ladies’ clothing but the staff was very helpful as I was browsing.

We had a great day out at Belmont and would happily play this course again through the season. The course conditions, challenge and playability were excellent. If Belmont lacks anything it is in the after golf experience. There is no uncovered outdoor patio and the menu is small and lacking some creativity, but it is well worth the experience for the golf.

Golf Course Review - McCleery Golf Course

We finally completed one of our golf goals which was playing each of the Vancouver Parks Golf courses this year. Our tour concluded with a visit to McCleery Golf Course a couple of weeks ago. We were looking forward to the visit after of a number of improvements they had made to the course maintenance and driving range.

Jeff's Opinion: On arrival we decided to hit the bucket of "warm-up" balls McCleery offers which was perfect at 25 practice balls to loosen up. While there is not a lot of trouble on the course, from most tee off boxes the driver areas appear much tighter than they are (which was a good thing). The greens rolled very true making putting a lot of fun. All players in our group made a couple of good putts. If there is a knock on the course it would be that some fairways were starting to show burn out due to the recent heat. Some extra irrigation may help. It was a fun day on the course and I would play it again. The variety of holes (particularly on the back nine) made the course a challenge. The Par 3 holes holes from the back tees were tough, with two of them over 200 yards.

Tara's Opinion: I enjoyed the fact that the course has five par three’s instead of the usual four because they give me a better chance at par. This was a good day in fact because with the help of some good putts on the smooth greens I was able to par 4 out of the 5 par threes (but don’t ask the score on the rest of the holes). I enjoyed the layout and the length of the red tees at just over 5,000 yards. But it is worth walking back to the blue tees to see the full design of the holes. While the staff were great and attentive, I did find the golf shop lacking in ladies clothing selection and both the clubhouse interior and the menu could use an upgrade. In any event it was a great day of golf.

We would recommend this course as fun to play multiple times per year!
