Should Martin Brodeur Be Team Canada's Starting Goalie

Brodeur Becomes a US Citizen
This blog doesn't come with the sex appeal or potential scandal of Tiger Wood's recent escapades and even the media didn't really grab on to this story like they did with the great one (Tiger not Wayne). Maybe the timing was too close to run both stories? However when Martin Brodeur became a U.S. citizen did he also give up his right to represent our country in the upcoming Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics?

Can a US Citizen Play for Canada?
Brodeur, who at 37 has played his entire NHL career with the New Jersey Devils, passed his citizenship test and has dual citizenship in Canada and the United States. However, as ... READ MORE

Golf Course Review - Greenacres GC

I played Greenacres for the first time last year and was quite impressed with the overall golf facility. Going in, Greenacres did not have the best reputation amongst our golfing friends and associates. However since being purchased by Shaughnessy Golf & Country Club about three years ago, new management and a commitment to capital improvements have dramatically improved this golf facility. I had the opportunity to play it again this year as part of the schedule for the Golf Pro / CK Golf Solutions Skins Game.

Jeff's Opinion: Greenacres was in good shape and considering the recent heat in Vancouver, was as the name states, pretty green overall. The green speeds were good, not overly fast, but ran very true. You really don't have to overplay any of the breaks. It is not overly long, but the back 9 does play longer than the front 9. The fairways were in great shape, very closely mown and the underbrush well cleaned out making the errant shot usually playable. Greenacres will yield some birdies, but the final few holes place an emphasis on driving accuracy.

Tara’s Opinion: While I did not play golf this time around I did join the group for lunch. The renovations to the clubhouse have made the space very inviting with a variety of seating options in the lounge, dining area or on the spacious patio. The menu has lots of options, not your typical golf course fare, and the weekly fresh sheet is an added bonus. Both the food and the service were great. The updated washrooms are also a nice touch.

Overall, it was a fun day and the feedback from the Professionals in the Skins Game was also very positive. There is certainly value in the green fee for the quality of conditions you get. I should also mention, the restaurant has a great menu selection, comfortable seating and numerous flat screen t.v.'s to watch the latest sporting event. Definitely worth stopping in for a bite after a game of golf.

Golf Course Review - Morgan Creek GC

I had the opportunity to play Morgan Creek Golf Course in Surrey a week or so ago. It started out as a boy’s golf trip to Loomis Trail, but it was wishful thinking we would zip across the border for the game. I was looking forward to playing at Loomis Trail, however when our group met up at Hazelmere the advertised border wait was 2.5 hours. It leaves me wondering what will happen at this border during the Olympics! In any event, after making a few calls, we were able to secure a tee time at Morgan Creek on short notice.

Jeff's Opinion: I hadn't played Morgan Creek in a few years and while disappointed about not playing at Loomis Trail, I was happy to be able to get another opportunity to play it. The course was in great shape; tee boxes well manicured, greens rolling at about 11 on the stimp meter, fairways very closely mown. There was obviously significant attention paid to the fertilizer and irrigation program as the course was one of the greenest I've see this year, not a brown spot to be found. The service in the Golf Shop, proximity of the warm-up range and frequency of the beverage cart visits were all excellent. The only thing I find odd about Morgan Creek is the arrival. After parking in the lot you carry your own clubs around the back of the Clubhouse, past some garbage bins and a cart wash area before reaching the Golf Shop. It has always seemed like a strange set-up to me.

None the less, Morgan Creek is in great shape and the service levels matched the course conditions, both which were excellent! I'd gladly play it multiple times through the season and highly recommend a trip to Surrey for a game.

Black Mountain Golf Club, Kelowna BC is teed up to Open this Saturday, June 6th!

Melcor Developments Ltd. is pleased to announce that Black Mountain Golf Club will be launching its complete public play daily fee golf course this Saturday, June 6th in Kelowna, BC.

At the centerpiece of the master-planned golfing community is the magnificent 18-hole, Par 71 Championship golf course. Taking its cue from the natural topography and vegetation of the land, the 6,394 yard course is dramatically sculpted into the Okanagan landscape, and features a signature island green.

Designed by Cooke Carleton International, Black Mountain’s challenging lay-out consists of six – Par 3’s, seven – Par 4’s and five – Par 5’s and has four tee box locations on each hole to accommodate golfers of all abilities. Black Mountain’s signature hole is the par 4 – 5th playing at 372 yards it features the Okanagan’s only island green.

“Black Mountain is a diverse site in a wonderful setting. I felt that there was great opportunity to create a very enjoyable memorable golf experience that required strategy and shot making to be successful”, said Wayne Carleton, Course Architect. “It will not be a course that you can over-power but, one that will require thought, strategy and patience to be successful.”

“With over 165 feet of elevation changes, Black Mountain has some breath taking views with truly amazing holes,” adds General Manager, Eric Thorsteinson. “I’m extremely excited to be part of this spectacular development and to add Black Mountain to the long list of tremendous golf courses in the Okanagan.”

Black Mountain Golf Club will officially open on Saturday, June 6th.

Golf Course Review - Northlands GC, North Vancouver, B.C.

It doesn't seem like we get a lot of firsts when it comes to playing golf in B.C., but we had a chance to play Northlands Golf Course for the first time a few days ago. We booked our tee time on-line and had a few issues with the system kicking us out, but overall it was fairly easy. When we received our email conformation it included a coupon for a 15 ball warm-up bucket each at a driving range down the street. This was a nice bonus as Northlands does not have a range of its own. So after a short warm-up session we took the short 5 minute drive up to the clubhouse.

Golf Course Review - Swaneset Bay Resort

In an attempt to make good on our earlier blog, British Columbia Golf Courses we plan to play in 09, and our own personal commitment to play more golf this year, we ventured out to the Swaneset Bay Resort last week. It was the first round of the year for both of us and we managed to score a perfect day weather wise.

Swaneset has 36 holes of fantastic golf set on a beautiful piece of property in Pitt Meadows, B.C. Both courses are designed by Lee Trevino and have been around for about 15 or so years. Jeff played it shortly after it opened, in the Canadian Assistants Championship with Tara as the caddie. The anticipation for the day began at the entrance way and one of the best drives up to the gigantic clubhouse, is there a better one in the Lower Mainland?

Previously owned by Intrawest Golf, new owners the West Coast Golf Group, have made a substantial investment and commitment to capital improvements on the golf course. Most notably was the amount of new drainage on the Resort Course which we played.

Jeff's Opinion: For the time of year, I felt the course was exceptionally dry especially considering the winter we had in Vancouver this year. As far as playability, I had a lot of fun playing it again after not having had the opportunity for almost a decade and a half. The course has a good mix of holes with a number of strategic tee shots mixed with some grip it and rip shots. I really enjoyed seeing the tee shots fly against some beautiful mountain back drops. Again, for the time of year the greens were in great shape and running about 9 on the stimpmeter, which were much faster then expected (a good thing). The Golf Shop staff were professional, friendly and accommodating and that added to my experience. I'm looking forward to playing it again soon or at least not allowing 15 or so years before my next visit.

Tara's Opinion: As you know the restaurant and the golf shop are as important to my opinion of a facility as the golf course itself. We started our day with breakfast in the restaurant. The food was good and the service fast. I ordered the pan-fried potatoes which were a bit undercooked but enjoyed Jeff’s shredded potatoes instead. The golf shop was full of the season’s new products and the ladies selection was quite good, too bad I did not have more time. I played the forward tees which at just over 5,600 yards were great for me. The par five’s were a bit long but I had a chance to make par on many of the par four’s (even though I did only once). I found the landing areas quite wide and forgiving and managed to make it all the way to the 14th hole before losing a ball. I was helped by the informative tee signs that note the distance from the tee to creeks that cross the fairway, which was great for someone who has not played the course before. If you haven't been to play Swaneset in the past few years or if you have never played the course, we would highly recommend you make a tee time as it was well worth it.
