CN Extends Title Sponsorship of CN Canadian Women’s Open Through 2013

North America’s Railroad to continue success story with Canada’s National Women’s Open Championship as well as CN Canadian Women’s Tour and CN Future Links

Oakville, Ont. – The Royal Canadian Golf Association (RCGA) is pleased to announce that CN will continue as title sponsor of the CN Canadian Women’s Open, as well as the CN Canadian Women’s Tour and CN Future Links. The extended three-year agreement will see CN continue its’ valued support of Canadian golf through 2013 with an additional two-year option through 2015.

"CN is delighted to announce that we will continue our title sponsorship of the CN Canadian Women’s Open, the CN Canadian Women’s Tour and CN Future Links," said CN President Claude Mongeau. "We at CN are very proud to be associated with the only LPGA tour stop in Canada - the CN Canadian Women's Open. Equally as important, our continued involvement with the event will provide a platform through the CN Miracle Match program to leave a lasting legacy at children’s hospitals in our event host communities. We are also committed to helping the RCGA ensure the future of the game of golf through our on-going support of the developmental CN Canadian Women's Tour as well as the CN Future Links program that helps junior golfers at the grass roots level learn to play and develop a passion for the game. Each of these tremendous properties is making an impact through golf in local communities across Canada.”

The partnership between CN and the RCGA dates back to an announcement made on October 29, 2005 that the inaugural CN Canadian Women’s Open would take place in 2006.

The CN Canadian Women’s Open, through the support of CN, has been elevated to become one of the premier tournaments in women’s professional golf. The $2.25 million (U.S.) purse for the 2010 CN Canadian Women’s Open to be held August 23-29 at St. Charles Country Club in Winnipeg will rank among the Top-5 purses on the LPGA Tour this season.

“CN represents the best in their business, so we’re thrilled to extend our relationship with a transportation company with such a rich history and bright future,” said LPGA Commissioner Michael Whan. “CN is the only railroad that crosses the continent east-west and north-south, serving the Atlantic, Pacific and Gulf coasts; the LPGA strives to satisfy its fans in the same fashion that CN clearly has done for its growing number of customers and partners. We thank both CN and RCGA for their long-time and on-going commitment to the LPGA, and we look forward not only to making our annual trip to Canada but also enhancing a relationship that extends well beyond the ropes into many facets of women’s golf development.”

The tremendously successful CN Miracle Match Program has continued to grow as the charitable component to Canada’s National Women’s Open Championship and further illustrate CN’s commitment as community champions. The program debuted in 2006 and to date has helped to raise just over $3.5 million for children’s hospitals in the host communities of the CN Canadian Women’s Open, including a record $1.6 million raised in 2009 for the Alberta Children’s Hospital in Calgary. More information about the program is available at http://www.cnmiraclematch.ca/.

“CN is playing a major role in supporting excellence in Canadian golf and we are thrilled to have them continue on as sponsor of the CN Canadian Women’s Open as well as the CN Canadian Women’s Tour and CN Future Links,” said Scott Simmons, RCGA Executive Director and CEO. “In addition to their commitment to raising money for children’s hospitals in the name of the event, they have elevated the status of the CN Canadian Women’s Open and women’s golf in this country, and are helping to support thousands of young golfers in communities across Canada. We are honoured to be continuing our partnership with CN and on behalf of the RCGA Board of Directors and staff, we thank them for continuing to invest in the future success of golf in Canada.”

RBC Deepens Commitment to Canadian Golf

RBC becomes partner of Team Canada High Performance Program and RCGA National Amateur Championships

RBC announces new funding initiative to support Canadian pros advancing to LPGA and PGA TOUR

PGA TOUR players Stephen Ames and Mike Weir become ‘Team RBC’ Ambassadors

TORONTO, ON — RBC today announced a significant extension of its golf sponsorship programs that will help fund and enhance grassroots and developmental programs across Canada.

Building Canadian Competitive Golf Excellence
Already the title sponsor for Canada’s national golf championship, the RBC Canadian Open, RBC will help fund Team Canada, the Royal Canadian Golf Association’s high performance national amateur golf team program. RBC will also contribute support to the resurgence of Canada’s national amateur golf championships, conducted by the RCGA.

“We are proud to support the RCGA’s vision to drive excellence in competitive amateur golf, building on the recent accomplishments of national team players like Nick Taylor, Matt Hill and Jennifer Kirby at the collegiate, national and international level,” said Jim Little, RBC chief brand and communications officer.

“Extending our support to Canada’s national amateur championships not only allows talented Canadian players to compete in world class competitions on home soil, but also offers so many more golf enthusiasts and volunteers across the country the long-term opportunity to get involved and be a part of this great sport.”

“We applaud RBC for their long-term vision in supporting an environment that will build competitive golf excellence in Canada,” said Scott Simmons, RCGA executive director and CEO. “Programs that promote grassroots and amateur competition as well as those that help support training and high performance opportunities are critical to Canadian golfers developing their competitive potential.”

Supporting Emerging Talent
RBC also announced plans to deepen its relationships with Canada’s emerging and established touring professionals.

RBC is creating a new initiative to help young male and female professional golfers make the jump to the professional ranks on the PGA and LPGA Tours. Beginning in 2010, RBC has created a new initiative to support emerging Canadian professionals making the transition to the PGA TOUR and LPGA Tour -- including 2010 graduates Graham DeLaet and Chris Baryla on the PGA TOUR, and Lisa Meldrum and Samantha Richdale on the LPGA Tour -- by providing a combination of funding and tailored, comprehensive financial planning and private banking services through its RBC Sports Professionals program. Athletes who elect to sign up for the program will become RBC ambassadors and carry corporate branding on their golf bags as they compete each week on the world’s stage.

“This step is a very important element of my development as a professional and my hat is off to RBC for taking a leadership role here and identifying the need,” said DeLaet. “It’s clear they really get it and are doing an admirable job connecting all the dots through support of Canadian player development from the grassroots all the way up to those of us fortunate enough to make the leap to the PGA TOUR. I’m pleased to be joining their program and am looking forward to meeting everyone on their team.”

Weir, Ames Join Team RBC
In addition, RBC is enhancing existing relationships with PGA TOUR pros Stephen Ames and Mike Weir by entering into new multi-year extensions with both players. RBC becomes the official bank for Ames and Weir and both will have RBC branding prominently featured on their staff golf bags when they compete each week on the PGA TOUR. The partnerships are anchored in philanthropy with RBC continuing on as presenting sponsor of the Stephen Ames Cup and the Mike Weir Foundation entering its second year as the national charity partner of the RBC Canadian Open.

“I have been fortunate to have had a very close partnership with RBC for a number of years now and I’m thankful to see that continue,” said Weir. “More importantly, however, I’m excited about their support at the amateur level and their investment in the future of Canadian golf. We are seeing many great young Canadian golfers coming up and the support of RBC will not only help them succeed, but will provide the opportunities for even more amateurs to pursue their dreams in the sport.”

“Canadians are showing every week that they can compete with the best in golf,” said Ames. “RBC’s grassroots commitment to the game will be a boost to the next generation of players that will pay dividends for years to come. Their strong commitment to charity, both through the RBC Canadian Open and my own charitable foundation, is also something that I’ve appreciated personally, not only for the future of the game, but also for the future of the programs that benefit communities across Canada.”

Ames kicked off his season on the PGA TOUR last week at the Kapalua event in Hawaii while Weir made his first start yesterday at the Bob Hope Classic in La Quinta, California. Weir and Ames join American standout Anthony Kim forming ‘Team RBC’ on the PGA TOUR.

“Over the past two years, supporting the RBC Canadian Open has given us an opportunity to engage so many of our clients, employees and community partners in an event that they enjoy,” said Little. “We’re very pleased to take the next step and invest further in the long-term future of golf in Canada by playing a greater role in nurturing the next generation of national golfing heroes and further developing the game that so many Canadians love.”

RBC AND THE RBC CANADIAN OPEN
In partnership with the Royal Canadian Golf Association (RCGA), RBC is the title sponsor of the RBC Canadian Open, the third oldest national golf championship worldwide, next only to the British Open and the U.S. Open. With a history of great players and premier fields, the RBC Canadian Open provides golf fans with the opportunity to experience the excitement of a world class event on Canadian soil. RBC also sponsors all levels of amateur sport, from grassroots programs in local communities to national sport organizations and elite-level athletes, and is Premier National Partner of the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games.

Jennifer Kirby Captures 2009 Royale Cup Canadian Women's Amateur Championship

- Australian Hillier breaks course record with 65-

Moncton, N.B. (RCGA) – Team Canada’s Jennifer Kirby of Paris, Ont., locked up her first national victory at the 2009 Royale Cup Canadian Women’s Amateur Championship on Friday at the Royal Oaks Estates and Golf Club in Moncton, N.B.

Kirby shot an impressive 1-under par 71, finishing with a four day total score of 71-66-73-71—282 (-6) to defeat fellow national amateur team member Sue Kim of Langley, B.C., by one stroke. Kim claimed second place with a 5-under par 283, while Stephanie Sherlock of Barrie, Ont., and Sarah Maude Juneau of Fossambault, Que., tied for third at one-under par 287.

“This is the biggest event I’ve ever won and it feels amazing,” said the exuberant Kirby. “I got a little nervous on the last hole, and when I get nervous I play a little quick. But my caddie and my Team Canada coaches did a great job of keeping me calm.”

With her win today, the soon-to-be University of Alabama freshman earns her first exemption into the 2009 CN Canadian Women’s Open to be held August 31- September 6 at Priddis Greens in Calgary, Alta.

The large gallery of fans gathered at Royal Oaks were treated to a dazzling battle between Kim and Kirby in the third and fourth rounds. Kirby played a fantastic front nine carding one birdie and one eagle, while Kim had some challenges with her putting. On the back nine, Kim managed to narrow Kirby’s lead when she chipped out of a bunker and made a short putt for par on the par 4 seventeenth hole.

“I didn’t play my best today, and I let my nerves get to me,” said Kim. “I will take what I learned today, and use it next week at Hampton Golf Club.”

Both Kirby and Kim will compete next in the Royale Cup Canadian Junior Girls’ Championship held at Hampton Golf Club in Hampton, N.B.

Kirby, Kim and Sherlock were followed closely by teammates Nicole Vandermade of Brantford, Ont., who finished in sixth place and Maude-Aimee LeBlanc of Sherbrooke, Que., who finished tied for seventh.

Whitney Hillier of Connolly, Western Australia, shot the day’s low round, carding seven birdies and eleven pars for a final round score of 65. With her score, Hillier broke the competitive course record—previously set by Kirby in the championship’s second round—and moved up the leaderboard to finish T10.

In the Mid-Amateur division (25-39 yrs.), two-time Canadian University/College champion Christina Spence Proteau of Port Alberni, B.C., took home the title topping Catherine Fortin of Beauceville, Que., with a total score of 298 (+10). Fortin finished with 305 (+17) followed closely by Jessica Luciuk of Barrhead, Alta., who finished third at 306 (+18).

The Mid-Master division (40+ yrs.) saw Calgary’s Kim Carrington defeat Terril Samuel of Etobicoke, Ont. Carrington and Samuel finished the final round tied with 312 (+24), but Carrington took home the trophy after winning a two-hole playoff. Host city’s Leanne Richardson had a tremendous comeback in the final round, and finished in third place at 318 (+30).

Ashli Bunch Claims Back-To-Back Titles on 2009 CN Canadian Women’s Tour

Prange, Brown, Sholer and Team Canada’s Sue Kim earn exemptions into 2009 CN Canadian Women’s Open

Mirabel, Que. (RCGA) – Ashli Bunch of Morristown, Tenn. outlasted the field at Hillsdale Golf and Country Club in Mirabel, Que. to take home top spot, the $10,000 winner’s cheque and the Tour’s Player of the Year award at the final event on the 2009 CN Canadian Women’s Tour.

Bunch, a 10-year LPGA Tour veteran, started the day a single-stroke ahead of the pack and shot a 1-over par 73 to edge out the field and claim back-to-back wins on the CN Canadian Women’s Tour.

The 2009 CN Canadian Women’s Open will mark Bunch’s third kick-at-the-can at an LPGA Tour stop north of the border.

She previously played at the Canadian Women’s Open as a rookie in 1999 where she missed the cut, and she followed that up with a T65th in 2000. Although she no longer holds an LPGA Tour card, the 33-year old looks at her recent bout of success on the CN Canadian Women’s Tour as a sign of a possible comeback.

“Calgary is going to be a great experience,” said Bunch. “I played at Priddis Greens (host of the 2009 CN Canadian Women’s Open) back in 1999 – my rookie year on the LPGA Tour. This time it’s going to be more of a circus with my 4-year old daughter and 20-month old son, not to mention my husband.”

The win today ensured Bunch the Tour’s Jocelyne Bourassa Player of the Year award.

Bourassa, a member of the Canadian Golf Hall of Fame and the only Canadian to win an LPGA Tour event in Canada, had the trophy named in her honour in 2005.

Team Canada’s Sue Kim of Langley, B.C. made a mid-day charge at Hillsdale, momentarily overtaking the lead, but a triple-bogey seven on the par-4 13th hole proved to be costly for the 2008 Player of the Year award winner.

Kim would go on to card a 2-under par 70 (74-70-144) to finish second at even-par for the championship.

“I played great today except for the one hole,” said Kim. “I pushed my drive right off into the trees and tried to hit a 3-wood under a branch. I ended up clipping a tree before getting it out and three-putting for the triple.”

LPGA Tour member Jessica Shepley of Oakville, Ont. and Jaclyn Burch of Satellite Beach, Fla., shot matching final-round 71’s (75-71-146 +2) to tie for third with Noriko Nakazaki of Hanover Park, Ill. (73-73-146).

Erin Thorne of Bracebridge, Ont., was named the top club/ teaching professional for the second consecutive event after firing a 77-75-152 +8 this week.

In addition, four more exemptions were awarded after today’s round through the CN Canadian Women’s Tour order of merit final standings.

Bunch led the 2009 order of merit standings for most of the season due to her win at the second Tour’s second event held at the Cutten Club in Guelph, Ont., where she won her exemption. She finished with 1575 points rounding out her stellar year on Tour.

Also earning order of merit exemptions into this year’s CN Canadian Women’s Open is Amber Prange of Noblesville, Ind. with 570.83 points, Sara Brown of Tucson, Ariz. with 537 points, Ashley Sholer of Hamilton, Ont. with 488 points and Team Canada’s Sue Kim of Langley, B.C. with 468.33 points.

Team Canada Members Earn Exemptions Into RBC Canadian Open And CN Canadian Women’s Open

Nick Taylor, Matt Hill, Maude-Aimee LeBlanc and Nicole Vandermade to tee-it-up at Canada’s men’s and women’s national open golf championships

Oakville, Ont. (RCGA) – The Royal Canadian Golf Association (RCGA) announced today that Nick Taylor of Abbotsford, B.C. and Matt Hill of Bright’s Grove, Ont. will be exempt into the 2009 RBC Canadian Open, while Maude-Aimee LeBlanc of Sherbrooke, Que., and Nicole Vandermade of Brantford, Ont., will be exempt into the 2009 CN Canadian Women’s Open.

The Team Canada members earned their exemptions into Canada’s Open golf championships after stellar starts to their 2009 seasons.

“These four talented players have showcased their pedigree so far this season,” said RCGA Executive Director and CEO Scott Simmons. “They are among the best amateur golfers in the world and we are certain to see exciting play from them as they compete with the PGA TOUR’s and LPGA Tour’s biggest and best names.”

Currently the number-one ranked player on the Royal and Ancient (R&A) World Amateur Rankings, Nick Taylor returns to the RBC Canadian Open looking to build upon his 2008 performance at Canada’s lone PGA TOUR stop, where he finished T53rd, the best showing by a home grown amateur at the Open since 1972.

Taylor is coming off his second consecutive appearance in the United States Golf Association’s U.S. Open Championship, where earlier this week he made the cut and finished as the low amateur for the event. The 21-year old University of Washington junior has broken many of his school’s golf records, including most victories (4) and become the first Husky to win Pac-10 Player of the Year. Taylor has amassed eight top-10 finishes in his 11 college tournaments this year, and has 17 career top-10 finishes.

Number-two World Ranked player, Matt Hill, also earns his exemption after a stellar run on the 2009 NCAA Div. I golf circuit. Hill fired a 2-under par 69 at the final round of the NCAA Division I National Championship to clinch his seventh win in his last eight tournaments. The NC State sophomore also became the second Canadian to claim the NCAA individual title and the first Canadian to win the Jack Nicklaus award. His eight tournament wins—the most in Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) history—earned him the ACC Player of the Year award. With his exceptional season, Hill joins an eminent group of former NCAA champions including Jack Nicklaus, Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods.

Maude-Aimee LeBlanc has enjoyed tremendous amateur success over the past three seasons, dating back to her victory at the 2006 Royale National Junior Girls Championship. After finishing T4th at the 2008 Royale Canadian Ladies Amateur Championships, the 20-year old went on to finish fourth in both team and individual standings at the 2008 World Amateur Team Championship. In 2008, as a freshman on the Purdue University Boilermakers golf team, LeBlanc earned six top-15 finishes and fired 11 rounds of even-par or better. This year, she tied for first at the Big-10 Championships, both as an individual and with her team. LeBlanc also competed at the 2008 CN Canadian Women’s Open at Ottawa Hunt & Golf Club.

Team Canada Development Team member Nicole Vandermade earns her exemption into the CN Canadian Women’s Open after her strong showing at the 2009 British Women’s Amateur. Vandermade was the low Canadian at the championship, making it to the second round of match-play. In her freshman year at Texas University, Vandermade had five top-15 finishes, including the Texas State Match (T4th) and the Dick McGuire Golf Invitational (T4th). The 19-year old also placed 10th at the Big 12 Invitational and T32nd at the NCAA Div. I West Regional Championships.

Taylor and Hill will join PGA TOUR stars Mike Weir, Stephen Ames, Anthony Kim, Trevor Immelman, Camilo Villegas and defending champion Chez Reavie as they compete in the 2009 RBC Canadian Open, July 20-26 at Glen Abbey Golf Course in Oakville, Ont. For more information and tickets, please visit www.rbccanadianopen.com.

LeBlanc and Vandermade will join LPGA Tour sensations Paula Creamer, Lorena Ochoa, Michelle Wie, Yani Tseng and defending champion Katherine Hull, as well as Canadians Lorie Kane and Alena Sharp at the 2009 CN Canadian Women’s Open, August 31-September 6 at Priddis Greens Golf and Country Club in Calgary. Ashli Bunch Claims Victory at CN Canadian Women’s Tour in Guelph

LPGA Tour member earns second exemption into CN Canadian Women’s Open

Guelph, Ont. (RCGA) – Ashli Bunch of Morristown, TN shot an impressive final-round 2-under par, 70, today at the Cutten Club in Guelph, Ont., to finish at 76-70-146 (+2) to claim her first career victory on the CN Canadian Women’s Tour.

With the win, the LPGA Tour member earned $10,000 and the second of seven exemptions into the $2.75 million (US) CN Canadian Women’s Open, which will be held August 31-September 6 at Priddis Greens Golf and Country Club in Calgary.

Click here for the full field final scores!

Bunch overcame the day’s unrelenting winds and cold temperatures to card four birdies and 12 pars to sit four strokes ahead of the competition. The deciding factor of today’s round was Bunch’s impressive putting.

“With the strong wind and cold weather today, the course was playing extra tough,” said Bunch. “I knew the scores wouldn’t be too low, so my main focus was getting into good positions by hitting fairways and greens.”

This was Bunch’s second Tour event, having previously placed T3 in the first CN Canadian Women’s Tour stop at Seymour Golf and Country Club in North Vancouver. After earning 600 points with today’s win, Bunch now leads the Order of Merit with 975 points.

Nicole Forshner of Banff, Alta., and Erica Moston of Belmont, CA both earned second place honours with a two-day total of 150 (+6). Three players tied for fourth with a total score of 151 (+7).

The Tour’s low amateur was former National Development Team member Brittany Henderson of Smiths Falls, Ont., who scored a two-day total of 78-77-155 (+11). Henderson birdied the 18th hole and carded 11 pars to finish T18.

The final stop on the CN Canadian Women’s Tour takes place July 13-15 at the Hillsdale Golf and Country Club in Mirabel, Que. Each stop on the 2009 CN Canadian Women’s Tour will feature a purse of $60,000, including $10,000 for the winner as well as an exemption into the 2009 CN Canadian Women’s Open and coveted Order of Merit points. The player with the most points at the end of the season will earn the Jocelyne Bourassa Player of the Year award.

The top four players on the 2009 Order of Merit who aren’t otherwise exempt, will earn the remaining exemptions into 2009 CN Canadian Women’s Open held at the Priddis Greens Golf and Country Club from August 31-September 6 in Calgary.

Now in its ninth year, the CN Canadian Women’s Tour has established a reputation as one of the premier women’s developmental golf tours in North America. Many of Canada’s top professionals have competed on the Tour including Lorie Kane, Isabelle Beisiegel and Alena Sharp. Each event plays out over 36 holes. With close to 300 participants annually in three championships across the country, the CN Canadian Women’s Tour continues to raise the bar for women’s professional golf nationwide.
