Junior Worlds
The Junior Worlds, one of the most prestigious touranments in the world, for young aspiring golfers who have the dreams and desires to make golf their future, begins today at Torrey Pines Golf Course in San Diego, California.
The Callaway Golf Junior World Golf Championships is truly unique with a total field size exceeding 1000 golfers. Participants from 45 states and 53 countries will be represented over the next four days. Not only is the Junior Worlds important to all the junior golfers who participate but it's also a big week for college coaches, who use the Junior Worlds as a hunting ground for up-and-coming talent.
Junior Golfers from 5 years old to 18 will competing at courses across San Diego - Torrey Pines, Country Club of Rancho Bernardo, Welk Resort, Lomas Santa Fe, Riverwalk, Sycuan Resort and Colina Park.
Megan Mahoney, the Executive Director of the San Diego Junior Golf Association, said, “I expect about 120 coaches from 80 schools will be roaming the grounds at Torrey Pines Golf Course, the site of the 15-17 age divisions for boys and girls over the four days of competition”.
One of the draws for coaches is the large international contingent the Junior World always attracts. The boys will be playing four rounds on Torrey Pines South, a course that was tough enough to host a U.S. Open while the girls will be playing the Torrey Pines North.
Many Junior World champions have gone on to enjoy successful careers on the PGA and LPGA Tours, including Amy Alcott, Notah Begay, Brandie Burton, John Cook, Dorothy Delasin, Ernie Els, Phil Mickelson, Corey Pavin, Pat Perez, Joan Pitcock, Nick Price, Kim Shipman, Craig Stadler, David Toms and Tiger Woods.
With one of the largest contingents, Canada is set to make its mark over the competition days. Two years ago, Eugene Wong represented Canada well by winning the Junior Worlds. This was the first time a Canadian has won such a prestigious event.
This year, Canada will be well represented again with some outstanding junior golfers.

Mitch Sutton Successfully Defends Canadian Junior Boys Title
Toronto’s Brandon Ng claims Canadian Juvenile title
Kitchener, Ont. (RCGA) – It was a battle to the finish, but when the divots settled at the 2009 Canadian Junior Boys Championship at Westmount Golf and Country Club, Mitch Sutton of London, Ont. was once again crowned champion.
Sutton fired a final round 1-under par 72 to finish at 6-under par and edge out third round leader Justin Shin of Maple Ridge, B.C.
Shin and Sutton both held the lead numerous times during the final round, but a double bogey five on No. 17 for Shin all but sealed the deal for Sutton.
“Tough break for Justin on No. 17,” said Sutton, shortly after coming out of the scoring tent. “He had a plugged lie in the bunker and ended up double bogeying. It was tough to watch, but it worked out well for me. I’m speechless right now. These past few weeks have been a blur.”
The win marks Sutton’s second in as many years at the Canadian Juniors. Sutton also claimed the Golf Association of Ontario’s (GAO’s) Investors Group Junior Boys' Match Play Championship on July 24th.
Last year at the Canadian Junior Boy’s Championship, Sutton outlasted Calgary’s Jack Wesche, who lost his drive on the final hole of the event before eventually double bogeying, and handing the lead over to Sutton.
This win was almost a mirror image of 2008’s final round, with Sutton finding himself in a sprint to the finish line with one of his playing partners. Like last year, Sutton managed to prevail.
“Last year’s win definitely helped prepare me for today’s finish,” added Sutton. “I had some nerves coming in on the back and my hands started to get a little shaky on a few putts. I thought back to last year, and how that panned out for me, which helped to calm me down.”
With the win, Sutton becomes the seventh competitor since the championship’s origin in 1938 to successfully defend his Canadian Junior Boys Championship title. Sutton, 17, is eligible for next year’s championship where he can look to become only the second to three-peat, with Winnipeg’s Rob McMillan (1992-1994) being the lone champion to accomplish the feat.
Despite the late blunder, Shin managed to finish T2nd with Dundas, Ont’s Mackenzie Hughes. Both tallied matching 5-under par 287’s.
Sutton and Shin will have little time to reflect on today’s events, as both head to the Canadian Men’s Amateur Championship which takes place August 9-13 at Club de golf Le Blainvillier in Blainville, Que.
In the 16-years of age and younger Juvenile Division, Toronto’s Brandon Ng (16) sailed to victory with his 4-under par 288 finish, which was also good enough for a T4th in the junior boy’s competition.
“Today’s win feels great, especially because it’s my last year in the age category,” said Ng. “I’m looking forward to next year, where hopefully I will play just as well or better.”

British Columbia Claims Inter-Provincial Team Title At Royale Cup Canadian Junior Girls Championship
Hampton, N.B. (RCGA) – Team British Columbia captured their 3rd consecutive and 11th Inter-Provincial Team Championship Wednesday at the Royale Cup Canadian Junior Girls Championship held at Hampton Golf Club in Hampton, N.B.
The defending champions continued their domination of the junior provincial competition, besting second place team Ontario by two-strokes with a two-day total team score of 458. Team Québec settled for third place honours with their final score of 463.
In the individual competition, Team Canada’s Anne-Catherine Tanguay of Québec took over top spot after shooting a blazing 5-under par 68, breaking the female competitive course record set by Taylor Schmidt yesterday. Tanguay was the picture of consistency in her second round, carding six birdies, 11 pars and one bogey for a two-day total of 72-68—140 (-6).
“I feel great, really excited,” said a smiling Tanguay. “I am happy with how I played today, and I’m especially happy with all those birdies! I want to keep playing well, because winning this tournament would mean so much to me.”
Tanguay lost last year’s Royale Cup Canadian Junior Championship to SooBin Kim of Coquitlam, B.C., after a sudden-death playoff in Winnipeg.
Four players hold their share of second place with two-day scores of 147 (+1). Among them are the remaining Team Canada members, Sue Kim of Langley, B.C., Jennifer Kirby of Paris, Ont., and Rebecca Lee-Bentham of Richmond Hill. Christine Wong of Richmond, B.C., shares second place with the national team members.
Wong entered round two in ninth place, but an eagle on the par-five fifth hole vaulted her to the top of the leaderboard. On the back nine, Wong kept the momentum going with back-to-back birdies on the 13th and 14th holes.
Kirby shot 1-under par yesterday, but three bogeys and a double bogey six proved costly for the newly crowned Royale Cup Canadian Women’s Amateur Champion.
Jennifer Yang of Coquitlam, B.C., leads the juvenile division with her score of 153 (+7), two-strokes ahead of Viviana Vazquez Vera of Santiago, Mexico, who sits at 155 (+9). Josée Doyon, of St-Georges-de-Beauce, Que., is in third at 156 (+10).
Play continues tomorrow with the third round teeing off at 7:30 a.m. Following today’s round the field was cut to the low 70 players plus ties. The final round is scheduled for Friday.
Live scoring from the 2009 Royale Cup Canadian Junior Girls Championship is available online. Players’ scores will be posted hole-by-hole and available at www.rcga.org/Championships.

B.C. looks to take top honours at 2009 Girls Junior America's Cup
LOGAN, UTAH - Earning a spot in this week’s Girls Junior America's Cup is a huge honour – and B.C.’s four-girl team is a force to be reckoned with.
Last year’s event held at Willow Park Country Club in Calgary, Alberta saw Team B.C. finish in second and team member, Christine Wong finish as low medalist – best finish ever for a Canadian team.
The annual event, in which 18 teams from multiple western states, Canada and Mexico form four-person squads to compete in a 54-hole team tournament, will be held at Logan Golf and Country Club, July 28-30. It is only the second time in the 32-year history of the event that the tournament will be held in Utah.
Last year’s low medalist, Christine Wong of Richmond, B.C. and Port Coquitlam’s Soo Bin Kim, the 2008 Canadian Junior and Juvenile Girls’ champion join Jennifer Yang of Coquitlam, B.C. and Lauren Taylor of Nelson, B.C. form a solid provincial team prepared to take on top juniors from Utah, Mexico, Alberta, Colorado, Arizona, Nevada, Oregon, Washington, Montana, Wyoming and California.
“I’ve really been looking forward to this” says Wong. “We have another great team this year and I want to bring home the gold.”
Wong recently returned from San Diego after playing in the Callaway Junior World Championships at Torrey Pines Golf Course and finished tied for fourth. Kim finished runner-up in the B.C. Women’s Amateur and the B.C. Junior Girls’ earlier this month.
The Girls' Junior America's Cup is a showcase team event in the western portion of the country for girls, ages 17 and under. The tournament features seventeen association teams from eleven western states, Hawaii, Canada and Mexico. Representing each association are four junior girls. Team members exemplify not only outstanding skill, but also true sportsmanship, discipline, courtesy and character.
The tournament passes to a different host association each year. Hosting this year’s girls' competition is the Utah Golf Association, July 28 -30 at Logan Golf and Country Club in Logan, Utah.
Lorena Ochoa, the LPGA’s top-rated player, is a three-time champion of this event. Other former competitors in the Girls Junior America’s Cup include six-time LPGA winner and Solheim Cup competitor Pat Hurst and LPGA star and fellow Solheim Cup competitor Natalie Gulbis.
The last time the Girls Junior America’s Cup was played in Utah was in 1991 at Ogden Golf and Country Club.
