2009 Johnston Meier Insurance Open

“HADWIN RED-HOT AGAIN AT SANDPIPER”
In blistering hot weather, 21 year old VGT Rookie Professional Adam Hadwin of Morgan Creek continued his run of near flawless golf this weekend at the 2009 JOHNSTON MEIER INSURANCE OPEN. Hadwin’s two round total of 66, 69 (-9) was good enough for a 2-shot victory over Seymour Creek’s Bryn Parry to win the title and collect $1,600 towards the Cleveland/Srixon Order of Merit standings.
After 27 holes of this Championship, it looked like Hadwin would be a shoe-in to win his third VGT event in only five tries. Sitting at 9 under par Hadwin had a five shot lead over Parry and seven shots over any third place chasers with 9 holes to play. Hadwin’s five shot lead however diminished over the first six holes on the back nine as two groups ahead John Shin made a late charge on the back nine including four birdies on the front nine, an eagle on the par 5 #15 and a hole-in-one on #16 to get himself to -7 for the day and the tournament. A late bogey on #17 would put Shin back to -6 for the tournament and in 3rd place overall, good for $900.
A CLUB CAR ACE: John Shin’s Ace on #16 WON him a CLUB CAR Precedent POWER CAR (www.clubcar.com) valued at $8,000!!! Thanks to Kevin Orton of Club Car, one of VGT’s Official Hole-in-one sponsors this year!
In the final pairing of the day Parry was also making a slow but steady charge of his own. After opening with a front nine score of 34 (-2), Parry continued his steady play with three birdies in a row on 13, 14 and 15 to get to -7 for the tournament. Hadwin made a birdie of his own on 11 to get to -10, but all of a sudden made this tournament quite interesting when he attempted to flop it from the side of the green on #15 and after two swings only advanced his ball a couple of yards. This lead to a bogey on his card and with three holes to play his lead had shrunk to only two shots over Parry.
Although Parry made a valiant run over the next three holes, including a great pitch shot from the side of the 18th green that nearly went in for birdie, Hadwin was hailed the Champion after he pitched up to 2 feet from the side of the green to win his third VGT Championship in only six starts. Hadwin continued his march up the CLEVELAND GOLF/ SRIXON CANADA Order of Merit but could not catch Parry who took home $1,100 for his 2nd place showing. After 13 VGT events, Parry leads Hadwin by only $462 with $9,937.50. More impressively is that both players have continued to battle for 1st and 2nd place in four of the last five events on the VGT schedule – Hadwin with three wins and two 2nd place finishes in as many events.
STROKE AVERAGES “IN THE RED”:
Both Hadwin and Parry are boasting incredible stroke averages so far this year on the Vancouver Golf Tour schedule. Hadwin has posted a remarkable stroke average of 67.27 over 11 tournament rounds and a whopping 46 under par for this stretch. Parry definitely battled some challenging winter/spring conditions on the earlier portion of the VGT schedule, but still holds a very solid stroke average of 69.16 over 18 rounds. He is also a total of 41 under par for the same 11 rounds of Summer VGT events and 43 under for all 18 tournament rounds since the start of the year. “These two are definitely separating themselves from the rest of the field on the Vancouver Golf Tour the past five events. It’s going to take a big challenge from any of the remaining 8 players in the top 10 of the CLEVELAND/SRIXON Order of Merit to knock either of them off the top. The Vancouver Open (final event to determine who will be awarded a paid entry down to the 2009 PGA Tour Q-School) will sure be a climactic end to the season” stated VGT Commissioner Fraser Mulholland.
AMATEUR HEADLINES:
It took a very impressive final round of 68 by Coquitlam’s Matt Rohatensky to take Amateur honours at the JM Open this year. Rohatensky finished t4th overall in the tournament at -4 with rounds of 72, 68 to win the Amateur title by 2 shots over Mission Golf Club’s Stu Dunaway and three shots over Sandpiper’s own Yves Bisson. This was Rohatensky’s third Amateur win on the VGT schedule, pushing him over 1,000 points ahead of his next competitor in the Championship Amateur Division of the CLEVELAND/SRIXON ORDER OF MERIT. In the Low Net side of the tournament it was Dave Dodsworth who stole the show with his impressive second round score of 77 (net 65). Both Rohatensky and Dodsworth took away winners’ trophies, a Sun Mountain Speed cart and $200 in Perfect Lies Gift Certificates.

Birdie Barrage at Guildford ends in Dramatic Fashion
Vancouver Golf Tour
After course record tying 63’s on day one, Seymour Creek’s Bryn Parry and Victoria based Canadian Tour Pro Stuart Anderson battled back and forth on Sunday to decide the 2009 Guildford Open Champion in classic style.
After round one on this newly resurrected event, there were a total of a dozen Professionals who carded 68 (-4) or better. Round two was a birdie shoot-out for those within a handful of shots of the lead, but none were up to the challenge of Anderson and Parry on this day.
Going down to the final hole, Parry and Anderson were tied at 14 under par. After staying level with each other at -11 at the turn, it was Anderson who took the lead with a birdie on the par 4 - 10th. Both Parry and Anderson then birdied the par 5 - 11th to keep Anderson 1-up on the day and 13 under par for the tournament. Parry was the next to make his move with birdies on # 13 and #14 to get to -14 and a one shot lead with 4 to play. This see-saw battle didn’t end here however as the 31 year-old Alberta born Anderson birdied the tough 15th to bring this tournament dead even at -14 with three to play. After pars on 16 and 17 by both players, this tournament would ultimately be decided either on the 18th or in extra holes.
After both Anderson and Parry split the 425 yard par four fairway with their drives, they were left with short iron approaches to a well guarded pin, surrounded by a gallery of 50-60 who were privy to this excellent display of golf. Anderson first to play, he took dead aim and made a great shot into the flag, some 12 feet below the hole. Parry was next to play and his iron shot covered the identical line as Anderson’s and spun back to within 6 inches of Anderson’s ball. He would be first to play.
Parry carefully studied his 12 ½ footer that would have put the pressure squarely on the shoulders of Anderson if it went in. He stroked the ball smoothly up the hill but his putt just wouldn’t take the break as he had expected and he would tap in for his par at minus 14 for the Championship. All gallery eyes now laid on Anderson- playoff or not? Anderson coolly stepped up and drained his 12 footer in the heart of the hole to win this exciting Championship by one shot at -15 for 36 holes. Some fantastic golf on this bogey-free tournament which consisted of 11 birdies and 2 eagles over the 2 days.
Anderson was interviewed after the tournament and was quick to thank his sponsor Laurie Guthrie of Fort McMurry, Alberta for giving him the opportunity to play on the Canadian Tour and pursue his dreams of making it to the PGA Tour. He also thanked Guildford’s Head Professional Dan Swanson for re-vitalizing the Guildford Open event and partnering it with the Vancouver Golf Tour.
Anderson has been a member of the Canadian Tour since 2001 and he has been getting better each year he has been out there. His first win came in 2005 at the Foster Farms California Classic and his second the following year at the Canadian Tour Championship, vaulting him to 11th on the 2006 Rolex Order of Merit. Since then, Anderson has become a steady player on the Canadian Tour, posting a number of top 5 and 10 finishes in ’07 and ’08 and continues to show his consistency with 5 top 20 finishes this year on tour including two top 5 finishes. Anderson’s focus will be to continue the remainder of the Cantour schedule which kicks off again this week in Calgary at the ATB Financial Classic. If his Cantour schedule will permit, Anderson plans to re-join VGT at the Vancouver Open Championship on Sept.13-15th at Fraserview, Langara and McCleery Golf Courses. He will then head down to PGA Tour Qualifying School in the fall.

2009 VGT SPRING CHAMPIONSHIP
Hazelmere Golf Course
Thursday, May 28th
TOURNAMENT REVIEW
“Jonas Schools them all at his home track at Hazelmere”
In a star-studded field of 45 Professionals, including 26 past or present Canadian Tour players, Hazelmere’s own Teaching Professional Phil Jonas showed them all how it’s done, shooting 68 (-4) on a challenging Hazelmere layout for a one shot victory over Guilford Head Professional Dan Swanson. Jonas’ lone bogey on the day came on the long par 3 – 7th hole, where he failed to get up-and-down for what would be his fault on the card. When interviewed after the round, Jonas owned up that it wasn’t the prettiest of rounds, but as he is so well known for, he made the very most of his good play and ‘worked his way around the golf course’ like he knows how to better than most anyone in the game, certainly here in Vancouver. Jonas took home $1,500 for his victory and vaulted himself some $1,300 ahead of past Nationwide Tour Player Bryn Parry. MarketPlace IGA’s John MacNichol was on hand to award the professional cheques to all winners. When Jonas was given the opportunity to speak, he very quick to add how thankful he and everyone playing VGT was for their continued support of local golf in Vancouver. China Tour player Dong Su and Shaughnessy Professional Lindsay Bernakevitch tied for 3rd, each winning $672.50. Swanson earned $1,000 for his 2nd place showing.
VGT gave a warm welcome to one of Canada’s finest young talented golfers, James Lepp - 2005 NCAA Champion and 2-time Greater Vancouver Charity Classic winner. “It was great to have James in our field today” stated VGT Commissioner Fraser Mulholland. “Not only does James add to the credibility of our tour by his presence, but it was great to see him back in action at what he does so very well”. Lepp fired 71 (-1), good for 5th place and $550. He commented after the round that it was ‘good to get back into his first tournament in over 6 months and feel the competitive juices flowing’. With only a bit of expected ‘tournament rust’ from not competing for so long, Lepp got the job done for the most part in the event– and other than a couple of late bogeys on his last two holes, looked very impressive and ready to return to action in both the Victoria Open and City of Surrey Open coming up on the Canadian Tour schedule starting next week. Lepp has been hard at work lately developing his own personal brand of golf shoes and golf apparel - KIKKOR GOLF (http://www.kikkor.com/).
The Spring Championship was the final event on the VGT Spring Series of events and CLEVELAND GOLF/SRIXON CANADA President Dan Dodman was present to award some bonus money to the top CLEVELAND/SRIXON staff player at the end of the Spring Order of Merit. Seymour Creek’s Dave Zibrik took home the $500 CLEVELAND/SRIXON BONUS cash for being the top CLEVELAND/SRIXON staff player at the conclusion of the Hazelmere event.
VGT’s 7th ‘Open’ tour event of the year was a great opportunity for the top local Professionals to see Hazelmere a couple of weeks in advance of the Canadian Tour event (City of Surrey Open) being hosted there on June 8-15th. We want to personally thank Hazelmere Golf Course for giving our local players this opportunity and hope that this might be the slight advantage our local players need to bring home a local victory in this major event on the Canadian Tour schedule.
VGT also invited 20 of its top Amateur players to play in the Spring Championship this Thursay. Low Amateur honours went to Coquitlam’s Matt Rohatensky, who carded 75 (+3) on the tough Hazelmere set-up to win by 2 shots over Delta’s Jarda Kollar. Rohatensky leapt ahead of Northview’s Derek Wray by 400 points in the Championship Amateur Order of Merit with his second victory of the year, earning himself a Cleveland Travel cover and $200 in Perfect Lies Gift Cards.
VGT’s top 5 Amateurs in Flight A were invited to the Hazelmere event and it was Greenacres’ own Daniel Lee who prevailed, winning a Cleveland Travel cover and a $100 Perfect Lies Gift Card. Pete Fung was the Low Amateur in Flight B, also winning a Cleveland Travel cover and a $100 Perfect Lies Gift Card.

St. Charles Country Club Selected as Host Venue for 2010 CN Canadian Women’s Open
Canada’s only LPGA Tour event returns to city of Winnipeg for first time since 1992
Winnipeg, Man. (RCGA) – CN and the Royal Canadian Golf Association (RCGA) are pleased to announce that St. Charles Country Club in Winnipeg has been selected as host venue for the 2010 CN Canadian Women’s Open.
“In partnership with CN, we are proud to announce that St. Charles Country Club has been selected to host the 2010 CN Canadian Women’s Open,” said Scott Simmons, RCGA Executive Director and CEO. “With a strong partnership commitment from the host city and a tremendous championship worthy venue, there is no doubt that Winnipeg fans will be treated to a fantastic showcase in 2010.”
With the selection of Winnipeg as the 2010 host city, CN and tournament officials will now begin to explore a local community beneficiary for the event as part of the CN Miracle Match fundraising program. The CN Miracle Match program has raised close to $2 million dollars for local children’s hospitals over the last three years leading up to and during the weeks of the CN Canadian Women’s Open.
“CN is pleased that the 2010 CN Canadian Women’s Open will be held in Winnipeg,” said CN’s senior vice-president, Sales, Stan Jablonksi. CN is proud that we are able to bring this national open to CN communities across this country and Winnipeg, with close to 2,000 CN employees, will certainly be a special host-city for the open. CN particularly looks forward to bringing the CN Miracle Match to Winnipeg, a city known for its generosity.”
The announcement marks the return of Canada’s only stop on the LPGA Tour to Winnipeg for the first time since Sherri Steinhauer won the 1992 du Maurier Classic at St. Charles Country Club.
“Winnipeg has an excellent track record in hosting major events and we are thrilled to be the host city for the 2010 CN Canadian Women’s Open,” said Stuart Duncan, President of Destination Winnipeg Inc. “We worked with the City, the Province and our partners to attract this prestigious tournament to the heart of the continent. Golf fans across Manitoba and the region will be able to see the best women golfers in the world and this is another great reason to visit our city and province during Manitoba Homecoming 2010. Subaru Canada Continues Partnership with RCGA as Presenting Sponsor of Golf Fore the Cure
Women’s golf events across Canada contribute to breast cancer fundraising program
Oakville, Ont. (RCGA) – the Royal Canadian Golf Association (RCGA) is pleased to announce that Subaru Canada will continue on as the Presenting Sponsor of Golf Fore the Cure.
Golf Fore the Cure, presented by Subaru, is a fundraising and awareness program created by the RCGA to engage women in the game of golf with non-intimidating, golf-related activities that help raise funds for breast cancer research and support programs.
“The RCGA is delighted that Subaru Canada is continuing their commitment as Presenting Sponsor of Golf Fore the Cure,” said Scott Simmons, RCGA Executive Director and CEO. Subaru Canada’s continued support of the program will help raise awareness about this disease while providing a fun, community-based women’s golf initiative to raise money for breast cancer research and support programs.”
Through their sponsorship of the Golf Fore the Cure program, Subaru Canada will be featured on all online, print and event-based program materials while gaining onsite promotional exposure at Golf Fore the Cure events across Canada. The opportunity to help make a difference within the community played a major factor in Subaru Canada’s decision to return as the program’s presenting sponsor.
“Golf Fore the Cure embodies the commitment to local communities and the support of active lifestyles that Subaru Canada supports wholeheartedly,” said Tod Sullivan, Subaru Canada’s National Director of Sales Planning, Sponsorship and Vehicle Distribution. “We are pleased to enable more Canadians to help the advancement of breast cancer research by taking part in an activity they love.”
The Golf Fore the Cure program exists through a partnership with the Canadian Cancer Society as well as the Quebec Breast Cancer Foundation. Since its inception in 2004, Golf Fore the Cure has helped to raise almost $1.8 million for breast cancer research and support programs through the participation of 29,490 women across Canada. In 2008, 14,450 golfers helped to raise a total of $675,000.
“On behalf of the Canadian Cancer Society, I thank Subaru Canada for continuing their support of the Golf Fore the Cure program,” said Dr. Barbara Whylie, President and CEO, Canadian Cancer Society. “Partners like Subaru Canada and the RCGA, as well as the thousands of Golf Fore the Cure participants across the country, are helping to raise funds in support of breast cancer research and support programs and we are extremely appreciative of their collective efforts.”
The Golf Fore the Cure program is aimed at growing women’s participation in the game of golf by introducing them to the game through fun, non-intimidating activities. Through a unique partnership structure with the Canadian Cancer Society (and Quebec Breast Cancer Foundation in Quebec) the program has women across the country participate in golf activities and raise money for a cause close to all women’s hearts – the fight against breast cancer.
Golf Fore the Cure, presented by Subaru Canada is also proudly supported by Tournament Sports (Nancy Lopez and Precept), Investors Group, Corona Light and Reader’s Digest.
As well, Alena Sharp – Canada’s top player on the LPGA Tour – is the national ambassador of the Golf Fore the Cure program.
The RCGA’s goal for 2009 is to have 15,800 women take part in the Golf Fore the Cure program and raise over $800,000 for breast cancer research and support programs. For a listing of sites taking part in Golf Fore the Cure across Canada, visit www.rcgagolfforethecure.ca.

Anthony Kim Selects RBC as Official Banking Partner
U.S. Ryder Cup hero signs multi-year deal to represent RBC brand on PGA TOUR
Miami, FL — RBC today announced that Anthony Kim, two-time PGA TOUR winner and eleventh ranked golfer in the world, has selected RBC as his exclusive worldwide financial partner. The parties have reached a multi-year endorsement agreement.
RBC is the title sponsor of the RBC Canadian Open, Canada’s national golf championship and the third oldest national championship in the world. RBC is the largest financial institution in Canada, the 4th largest in North America, and the 10th largest in the world. RBC has an extensive retail profile in banking, capital markets and wealth management in the U.S., Canada and 52 other countries.
For the term of the agreement, Kim will be a staple of RBC’s advertising and marketing efforts in the U.S., and carry an RBC branded Tour bag while playing the PGA TOUR.
“RBC is proud to be associated with Anthony Kim, a highly recognizable worldclass professional athlete who can help us grow our brand in the U.S.,” said Jim Little, RBC chief brand and communications officer. “Anthony’s image on the golf course as a professional, a creative shotmaker, and a winner will be accompanied by the RBC brand bag at PGA TOUR events and be seen by millions on network broadcasts and PGA TOUR event coverage.”
Kim noted several factors that led to the deal. “I realize how important finding the right fit is when it comes to a successful partnership,” Kim said. “Since I played the RBC Canadian Open last year, I’ve been impressed by RBC, its brand and its leadership team, especially as I got to understand more about the company’s reputation as one of the world’s most stable and strong financial institutions.”
“I’m looking forward to working with the RBC business leaders, meeting their clients, and contending at the RBC Canadian Open for many years to come,” Kim said.
“Anthony is a rising star on the PGA Tour who has continually demonstrated values that RBC holds dear,” Little said. “He is a champion. He is a Ryder Cup hero. He plays with determination and precision, is a driven competitor and an excellent ambassador for the game and, we feel, the future of the PGA TOUR. From customer hosting to branded experiences for golfers and golf fans in both Canada and the U.S., we look forward to building on our successes in golf with Anthony. “
RBC is one of only two global corporations that have branding in association with Anthony Kim on the PGA TOUR, the other being Nike.
From the moment RBC announced their title sponsorship of the RBC CanadianOpen in late 2007, RBC and the RCGA (Royal Canadian Golf Association) have been working tirelessly in strong partnership on a plan to make the RBC Canadian Open best in class. RBC and RCGA Name Mike Weir Foundation as National Charity Partner for RBC Canadian Open
Mike Weir Charity Classic to be held Monday of RBC Canadian Open tournament week; RBC expands relationship with Canadian golf icon; PGA TOUR stars confirm their intent to compete for Canada’s national Open Championship
Toronto, Ont. (RCGA) — The Mike Weir Charity Classic will take place on Monday, July 20 at Glen Abbey Golf Club. The high-profile charity fundraiser will feature marquee celebrities from the music, sports and entertainment industries including two-time NBA MVP Steve Nash as well as several notable players on the PGA TOUR. This star-studded event will be a true highlight of event week.
“A critical component of our being title sponsor of the RBC Canadian Open is to ensure we are generating charitable legacies in our communities,” said Gordon M. Nixon, RBC president and CEO. “Creating the Mike Weir Charity Classic during tournament week is an important step towards this objective and will help improve children’s wellness across Canada.”
The Mike Weir Foundation supports numerous worthwhile causes in support of the physical, emotional and educational welfare of children. All net proceeds from the Mike Weir Charity Classic will benefit children’s charities through the Foundation.
“Supporting children’s wellness is the main goal of the Mike Weir Foundation and I am pleased to have RBC and the RCGA as partners in realizing this vision,” said Mike Weir. “I’m looking forward to the RBC Canadian Open and hosting the Charity Classic. It’s for a great cause and part of the RBC Canadian Open’s commitment to the community. It’ll be a lot of fun.”
The opportunity to add a philanthropic component to the RBC Canadian Open aligns with the RCGA’s and RBC’s long term strategic plan for the event.
“We are extremely proud to partner with the Mike Weir Foundation and welcome the Mike Weir Charity Classic to tournament week of the RBC Canadian Open,” said Scott Simmons, RCGA Executive Director and CEO. “Adding a significant charitable element to Canada’s national Open championship is a major focus of our strategic vision for the event and together with RBC, we feel that aligning our philanthropic efforts with the Mike Weir Foundation is an ideal fit and to be in a position to announce the type of talent we have secured is very fulfilling for everyone involved.”
As part of today’s announcement, RBC also announced it is expanding its marketing relationship with Mike Weir to include all of its financial service categories.
Last week, RBC announced it had established a relationship with Stephen Ames and his foundation’s work with youth in Canada and Trinidad and Tobago. “Building partnerships with some of the most recognizable players on the PGA TOUR helps us enhance the RBC Canadian Open and drives our business objectives,” said Jim Little, RBC Chief Brand and Communications Officer. “We want to leverage our deepening role in golf to build brand experiences for our clients and golf fans in Canada as well as enhance brand awareness for RBC in the U.S. and internationally. In partnership with the RCGA, the PGA TOUR and other sponsors, we are revitalizing the RBC Canadian Open and restoring it to its rightful place as one of the premier stops on the PGA TOUR.”
Following the conclusion of the 2008 RBC Canadian Open, officials from RBC and the RCGA sat down as part of its ongoing dialogue with Team Weir to discuss the concept of adding a new event that would address two key objectives. Beyond simply raising charity dollars, the intent was to formalize the role Weir could play in helping to engage fellow PGA TOUR players to support the philanthropic mission of The Mike Weir Foundation, while helping to enhance the Field of the RBC Canadian Open.
Led in part by Weir’s input, rapport and dialogue with his peers, the RBC Canadian Open is thrilled to announce that marquee names have already committed to play in the Mike Weir Charity Classic and challenge for the 100th playing of Canada’s national Open championship, July 20-26 at Glen Abbey Golf Club.

New season, new deals for PGA Tour players
By JEFF BABINEAU, Golfweek Editor
KAPALUA, Hawaii – PGA Tour veteran Steve Lowery paused when asked if there was anything new in his golf bag to start the 2009 season. “Only everything,” he said, smiling.Lowery, 48, a longtime Cleveland staff player, is one of many Tour pros starting ’09 with a new deal. He is carrying a TaylorMade bag filled with TaylorMade Tour Preferred irons and an r7 Limited driver. He’ll continue to play a Titleist golf ball (“I’ve been a Titleist guy for 30 years,” he said.)
In a sign of tighter times for PGA Tour players, Lowery still is seeking a corporate endorsement on his chest. “Yeah, I had to go out and buy a bunch of shirts,” he said.
Vijay Singh started the year with a bum right knee and a new golf ball. Having won last year’s FedEx Cup playoffs with a Titleist Pro V1x, Singh has switched to a Srixon Z-Star golf ball. Boo Weekley is playing the new ball as well. “I think I hit it longer and I control it pretty good,” Singh said. “(It) spins as good as any ball I’ve used, and it’s very straight.”
Singh also is carrying the Stanford Financial logo on his bag this season and wearing the company logo on his visor.
In other news:>> Anthony Kim, arguably the most attractive “free agent” available this offseason, is expected to re-sign with Nike. Kim changed agents in 2008 (he now is represented by IMG), which stalled negotiations until Jan. 1. “I don’t know what’s going on there, but it would be strange not to be with Nike,” said Kim, who shot footage for a Nike commercial with Tiger Woods in Fort Worth, Texas, in the offseason.
>> Adams is expected to announce the signing of Ryder Cup player Chad Campbell, who had been with Nike. Campbell lives near the company’s Texas headquarters and plans to take an active role in helping Adams develop equipment lines. Campbell signed a ball, shoe and glove deal with Titleist.
>> D.J. Trahan, formerly with Wilson, has joined Titleist as a full-line player. He opened his season at Kapalua with Titleist ZM irons (4-PW), three Vokey wedges and a Scotty Cameron Newport SLT T10 putter. He is working on getting a new 909 series driver into his bag.
>> In addition to Lowery, TaylorMade added Paul Goydos, Richard S. Johnson, Tim Wilkinson, Charles Warren and Arjun Atwal as full-line players.
>> Ping announced it has re-signed Ryder Cup player Hunter Mahan, and Callaway announced a new multiyear agreement with Stuart Appleby.

Woods, GM end endorsement deal
GOLFWEEK STAFF
When Tiger Woods returns to the PGA Tour next season, he won’t be playing out of a Buick-logoed bag.
Buick-parent General Motors, struggling to stay afloat amid the worst sales environment in a quarter-century, announced Nov. 24 in a message to dealers that Woods no longer will pitch company products, effective at the end of this year.
Woods had one year remaining on a five-year deal worth $40 million, according to Advertising Age magazine.
“It’s with great emotion that I wish to inform you that the time has come forour longterm relationship with Tiger Woods to end,” Susan Docherty, vice president of Buick-Pontiac-GMC, said in the e-mail announcement to employees, dealers, partners and suppliers.
According to the message and a subsequent news release by Buick, the break-up was amicable. A message left by Golfweek with Mark Steinberg, Woods’ agent, was not immediately returned.
“I am very proud of the long-standing partnership I’ve had with GM and have enjoyed being a part of the company’s dramatic product evolution,’’ Woods said in a statement.
Woods, who has won 65 Tour events, earns nearly $100 million annually from endorsements with such brands as Nike, EA Sports, American Express and Tag Heuer, among others, according to Ad Age.
In October, Buick approached Woods about the possibility of renewing the contract beyond 2010. However, in recent weeks, both sides re-evaluated their positions, according to a source close to the negotiations. Woods and wife Elin are expecting their second child early in ’09.
GM’s troubles have deepened in recent weeks, with chief executive Rick Wagoner joining CEOs from Ford and Chrysler in lobbying Capitol Hill for a federal bailout of the ailing automakers.
Earlier this month, GM reported a $2.5 billion quarterly loss and warned that by the end of the year it might reach the minimum level of cash needed to run the company.
Experts say a company that falls below minimum cash levels will have to stop paying some of its bills, a move that could force GM into bankruptcy protection. In that climate, marketing budgets are a prime target for cost savings.
Mark LaNeve, GM’s vice president for North American marketing, said GM and Woods started discussing an end to the deal earlier this year, and it had nothing to do with GM’s quest for $25 billion in federal loans for the auto industry.
But the company’s statement said the decision was made as part of “the search for budget efficiencies during a difficult economy for General Motors.’’
GM is so concerned about costs that it cut advertising during the 2009 Super Bowl, although it still plans to sponsor the National Football League and likely air ads before and after the game. GM also has pulled out of the Oscars and Emmy awards in 2009 – the first time in more than a decade that it is not running ads before, during or after the two events.
U.S. automakers, the largest category of advertisers, cut ad spending 18 percent to $1.37 billion in the second quarter compared with the same period in 2007, according to TNS Media Intelligence in New York.
Foreign automakers also are trimming their spending on advertising in U.S. markets, with a 5.4 percent cut in the second quarter, for an overall 11 percent drop in U.S. auto ad spending to $3.27 billion, the 12th quarterly dip in a row.
“Everything we do right now we are taking a harder look at,” Larry Peck, Buick and Pontiac promotions manager, said of the break-up with Woods.
The decision to jettison Woods, the most-visible face of the Buick brand since January 2000, speaks volumes about the deteriorating economic climate for manufacturing and, perhaps, golf.
As part of his deal, Woods carried a Buick bag, appeared in Buick promotions and made personal appearances for the carmaker. He recently caddied for a contest winner at Torrey Pines, site of the Woods’ dramatic U.S. Open victory in June. Woods has not played since, recovering from knee surgery. His return date has been the subject of much conjecture.
Buick remains the official car of the PGA Tour, but it recently eliminated some regional relationships that will limit some tournaments’ use of Buick “courtesy cars’’ next year.
Buick still will sponsor two events on the PGA Tour, the Buick Invitational in February at Torrey Pines and the Buick Open in Flint, Mich., but those deals expire in 2010. With the mantra of cost savings, it’s unclear what will happen with those Tour stops in the future.
Hank Haney, Woods’ instructor, also had his endorsement deal cut short by a year. Haney had signed a three-year deal, which expires at the end of 2010.
“Our budgets are being reduced,” Peck said. “Most likely the money we are now saving will be put towards budget savings or cost elimination.”
