The Vancouver Board of Parks and Recreation and Vancouver Parks Golf along with the Vancouver Golf Tour are pleased to announce the opening of registration for the estimated $50,000 Vancouver City Open. The tournament will be conducted September 13th – 15th, 2009 and feature a 54 hole stroke play competition to determine the Champion. All three Vancouver Parks Golf Courses, Fraserview, McCleery and Langara, will play host to one round of the Championship. The opening round of the tournament will allow three amateurs to play with a featured Vancouver Golf Tour Professional in the CKNW Orphan’s Fund Pro-Am.
The Vancouver City Open is open to all Golf Professionals and Amateurs with an RCGA Handicap Factor of 18 or less, while the Pro-Am allows amateurs with a handicap under 36 to participate. A full field of 220 competitors is expected to play and based on a sold out event the Professionals will play for a cash purse of $25,000 and the Amateurs will compete for a share of $25,000 in prizes.
“We are very pleased to have partnered with the Vancouver Golf Tour to host such an exciting event for our city”, stated Ron Caswell, Manager of Operations, Vancouver East District, “we believe this is a great showcase of our courses, which will provide a great challenge to the Professionals and fun day for the Pro-Am participants.”
“It is such a great opportunity to bring the Vancouver City Open back into Vancouver, we are excited to be playing Fraserview, McCleery and Langara as we believe it will enhance our event,” said Fraser Mullholand, Commissioner of the Vancouver Golf Tour.
Among the participants confirmed include VGT’s top three Order of Merit players Phil Jonas, Dan Swanson and Bryn Parry (former Nationwide Tour Player), who stated, “I am very excited about the opportunity to play in a true Vancouver City Open Championship at three great golf courses like Fraserview, McCleery and Langara. It is going to be the premier event of the local Vancouver Golf season and I look forward to being a part of the event to help raise money for the CKNW Orphan’s Fund.”
Day one’s Pro-Am will be held at Fraserview Golf Course with the non-Professional competitors playing at Langara Golf Course. On day two, the Professionals and Amateur competitors switch courses before a 36 hole cut is established for each category and flight. The final round will be contested at McCleery Golf Course on September 15th. Volunteer opportunities for the Vancouver Open are available for all golf enthusiasts.
