Full Field Set to Compete in CJGA Junior Worlds Qualifier This Weekend

Markham, Ont. (March 20, 2009) – The Canadian Junior Golf Association (CJGA) will continue its British Columbia tournament schedule this weekend, March 21-22, at Hazelmere Golf Course in South Surrey, British Columbia. A full field of juniors are preparing themselves to solidify a coveted spot to represent CJGA Team Canada at the Junior Worlds Golf Championships including season opening division winners Adam Svensson, 15, of Surrey and Callum Robinson, 14, of Langley. Last season, CJGA member Eugene Wong, now a member of the University or Oregon golf team, became the first Canadian in history to win the event, one of the largest junior golf tournaments in the world.

Svensson, who had a top 10 finish at last year’s Junior World Golf Championship while representing the CJGA and Canada will look to return to Torrey Pines in 2009. He will face a difficult this weekend in the Boys 15-19 Division as a full field of juniors will be most up for the challenge. Former CJGA Team Canada member and Calgary, Alberta native Rhys Tosczak, 17, has made the trip to compete at Hazelmere along with Brian Jung, 15, of Port Coquitlam, Bryan Lichimo, 17, of North Vancouver. Other notable juniors in the field include last week’s runner-up Junho Lee, 17, of Pitt Meadows, James Fahy, 16, of Vancouver, Jay Kim, 16, of Surrey, and TJ McColl, 17, of Surrey.

Robinson will have his hands full as he tries to make it two in row as the season opener’s runner-up Donald Qui, 12, of Richmond and Guntas Sidhu, 14, of Port Coquitlam are in the field. Also in the mix will be a couple of Richmond, B.C. natives and former CJGA Team Canada members who travelled to the Junior Worlds last year, Curtis Chan, 12, and Chris Crisologo, 13.
Expect a crowded leaderboard in the Girls Division this weekend as they vie for a spot on CJGA Team Canada. Last week’s runner-up Taylor Kim, 14, of Surrey will look for her first victory of the season after being edged by one stroke in the season opener. Jennifer Yang, 15, of Coquitlam, will also be gearing for her first victory of the season after capturing two division titles last season. Victoria Choi, 17, of Langley and Porsche Campbell, 16, of Vancouver should also contend this weekend.

The tournament will get under way at 11:00AM each day. Spectators are encouraged to attend.
