…Calgary resident looks to help young people develop skills and confidence through golf
The Canadian Junior Golf Association (CJGA) proudly named Canadian PGA TOUR professional Stephen Ames as the CJGA’s national spokesperson today.
Ames first became affiliated with the CJGA six years ago when he appeared at their annual Junior Golf Fundraising event. Already a huge supporter of junior golf in his native Trinidad & Tobago, Ames wanted to explore ways that he could also support junior golf at home in Canada.
In 2005, Ames worked with the CJGA to create the Stephen Ames Cup, an annual Ryder Cup style tournament that brings together junior golfers from Trinidad & Tobago and Canada. The teams travel to each other’s country as they alternate playing host to the tournament.
“Supporting junior golf is very important to me as I have seen how it can help young people develop the skills and confidence that they will use for the rest of their lives,” said Ames. “The CJGA has done some great work with Canadian junior golfers over the past 16 years and I am proud to be able to assist them in their work by serving as the organization’s national spokesperson.”
In addition to the financial support of the Stephen Ames Foundation in hosting the annual Stephen Ames Cup, RBC announced their support earlier this month as presenting sponsor of the international tournament.
“Stephen has done wonders for junior golf in Canada and Trinidad & Tobago, and we very much appreciate him adding the role of CJGA National Spokesperson to his list of contributions,” said Earl Fritz, Executive Director/Founder of the CJGA. “Stephen has shown his love for the game in the most admirable way by supporting our youth and their development in golf. He represents everything that the CJGA hopes to share with Canada’s young people through golf and we’re thrilled to have him join the CJGA team.”
