British Columbia Claims Inter-Provincial Team Title At Royale Cup Canadian Junior Girls Championship

Hampton, N.B. (RCGA) – Team British Columbia captured their 3rd consecutive and 11th Inter-Provincial Team Championship Wednesday at the Royale Cup Canadian Junior Girls Championship held at Hampton Golf Club in Hampton, N.B.

The defending champions continued their domination of the junior provincial competition, besting second place team Ontario by two-strokes with a two-day total team score of 458. Team Québec settled for third place honours with their final score of 463.

In the individual competition, Team Canada’s Anne-Catherine Tanguay of Québec took over top spot after shooting a blazing 5-under par 68, breaking the female competitive course record set by Taylor Schmidt yesterday. Tanguay was the picture of consistency in her second round, carding six birdies, 11 pars and one bogey for a two-day total of 72-68—140 (-6).

“I feel great, really excited,” said a smiling Tanguay. “I am happy with how I played today, and I’m especially happy with all those birdies! I want to keep playing well, because winning this tournament would mean so much to me.”

Tanguay lost last year’s Royale Cup Canadian Junior Championship to SooBin Kim of Coquitlam, B.C., after a sudden-death playoff in Winnipeg.

Four players hold their share of second place with two-day scores of 147 (+1). Among them are the remaining Team Canada members, Sue Kim of Langley, B.C., Jennifer Kirby of Paris, Ont., and Rebecca Lee-Bentham of Richmond Hill. Christine Wong of Richmond, B.C., shares second place with the national team members.

Wong entered round two in ninth place, but an eagle on the par-five fifth hole vaulted her to the top of the leaderboard. On the back nine, Wong kept the momentum going with back-to-back birdies on the 13th and 14th holes.

Kirby shot 1-under par yesterday, but three bogeys and a double bogey six proved costly for the newly crowned Royale Cup Canadian Women’s Amateur Champion.

Jennifer Yang of Coquitlam, B.C., leads the juvenile division with her score of 153 (+7), two-strokes ahead of Viviana Vazquez Vera of Santiago, Mexico, who sits at 155 (+9). Josée Doyon, of St-Georges-de-Beauce, Que., is in third at 156 (+10).
Play continues tomorrow with the third round teeing off at 7:30 a.m. Following today’s round the field was cut to the low 70 players plus ties. The final round is scheduled for Friday.
