Six Canadians Head To Wales For Ladies British Open Amateur Championship

Harlech, Wales (RCGA) – Six Canadians, including the entire National Women’s Amateur Team, will compete next week at the 106th staging of the Ladies’ British Open Amateur Golf Championship from June 9-13 at the Royal St. David’s Golf Club in Harlech, Wales.

Maude-Aimee LeBlanc of Sherbrooke, Que., will return looking to improve on her performance last year where she was the top Canuck advancing to Round of 8 in match play. Joining LeBlanc from the National Women’s Amateur team will be Stephanie Sherlock of Barrie, Ont., Kira Meixner of Richmond, B.C., and Sue Kim of Langley, B.C.

National Women’s Development team members Jennifer Kirby of Paris, Ont., and Nicole Vandermade of Brantford, Ont., will also compete in the championship.

LeBlanc, Sherlock and Meixner will also represent Team Canada as 12 nations compete for the Team Award during the stroke play competition. They will also play a warm-up match against the French National Team on Saturday, June 6, 2009 at the famous Royal Liverpool Golf Club at Hoylake, a previous Open Championship venue.

“This year’s team is an extremely talented group of golfers,” said Dean Spriddle, RCGA Women’s National Coach who will accompany the team along with Assistant Coach, Robert Ratcliffe. “We have seen some tremendous play from these golfers this year, and they have undoubtedly earned the right to represent our country on the world stage.”

Play begins Tuesday with the first two rounds of stroke play acting as a qualifier for the match play which begins Thursday. World Golf Hall of Fame member and Canadian Golf Hall of Fame member Marlene Streit is the only Canadian to ever win the Ladies’ British Open Amateur Championship having claimed the title in 1953.
