Team Canada Heads to Japan For World Junior Golf Team Championship

Toyota-shi, Japan (RCGA) - National Development team members Mitch Sutton, Julien Goulet, Richard Jung and Albin Choi will represent Canada at the 2009 World Junior Golf Team Championship (WJGTC) from June 15-19 in Toyota-shi, Japan.

The 18th playing of the annual event will be at Chukyo Golf Club Ishino Course, where Team Canada will be one of 14 countries competing for the coveted Toyota Cup.

The Development Team earned their chance to compete in Japan after topping Mexico by 7-strokes to finish in first place at the regional zone qualifier at the Capilano Golf & Country Club in West Vancouver, B.C., in April.

“We are proud to have these four players representing our country on the international stage,” said Doug Roxburgh, RCGA Director of High Performance. “After their tremendous finish at the zone qualifier, we are sure to see some exciting play from these individuals at the World Junior Golf Team Championship.”

National men’s team Coach Henry Brunton and non-playing Captain Wayne Joyce will be accompanying the team to Japan.

Canada will look to build on its last showing at the 2007 WJGTC when the team finished 10th. In 15 years of competing in the event, Canada has seven top-5 finishes, with their best result coming in 1994 when Team Canada took home runner-up honours.

The WJGTC is the world’s only junior golf championship in which 14 national teams, winners of regional qualifiers held across six continents, compete for the world championship trophy. The competition consists of four rounds of stroke play starting Tuesday, June 15. Individual and team champions will be named after Friday’s final round.
